India's potential Super 8 Group

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

The way things are lining up, i.e. NZ knocked out, and B'desh making it to the next round ahead of SL, this would be our Super 8 group. I would've taken it with both hands if someone had mentioned it before the tourney started :agree:

India

Australia

Bangladesh

Afghanistan

Edit: Looks like there's a lot of confusion regarding the groupings in Super 8 so adding more information. The top 2 teams were seeded for every group and were given the seeds such as A1, A2, B1, B2 etc. as mentioned in the following article...

https://www.bbc.com/sport/cricket/articles/cj7mmedrjryo

The 20 sides are split into the following four groups in the initial phase:
Group A: Canada, India (A1), Ireland, Pakistan (A2), USA
Group B: Australia (B2), England (B1), Namibia, Oman, Scotland
Group C: Afghanistan, New Zealand (C1), Papua New Guinea, Uganda, West Indies (C2)
Group D: Bangladesh, Nepal, Netherlands, South Africa (D1), Sri Lanka (D2)

For Super 8, the two groups were already determined and no matter where you end up in group standing, your spot in Super 8 group remains the same. For example, India is deemed A1, and even if it finishes up 2nd in the group, they'll still be A1 and go into the Super 8 Group 1. And here's the schedule for the Super 8 matches for India (A1)...

India (A1) vs NZ (C1) or Afg, Bridgetown Jun 20
India (A1) vs SL (D2) or B'desh, North Sound Jun 22
India (A1) vs Australia (B2), Gros Islet Jun 24

So in this case if NZ doesn't make it to the next round, Afg will replace them as WI is C2 and will go to the other group. Same with B'desh making it to our group if SL doesn't make it as SA will end up in the other group. Same way Aus will end up in our group no matter whether Scotland or Eng make it to the next round. In case Eng bows out, Scotland will make it to Group 2 instead of England.

This should make it easier to understand.

India needs to beat both BAN and AFG. That's a big risk, we tend to be complacent and overconfident against those team for no good reason. We may pay the price. I will prefer SA /NZ.

If we can't get into semis from that group, we don't deserve to win. Simple. We should be able to win 2 out of those 3 matches.

Think its wrong ... as of now if we top group A, then our seeding will be A1 and we will be in a group comprising C1, B2 & D2,

Potentially it will be India, West Indies, Scotland & Bangladesh (assuming that West Indies finish ahead of Afghanistan)

New Zealand aren't knocked out yet..

They can easily beat WI and then smash the two ultra minnows (PNG & UGA) to cover up for the NRR dent created by Afghanistan.

Nz is guaranteed loss..given our abysmal record against them in must win games

Do the top two progress or do we have super six after this

Naah we almost never lose to these two.

The reason we almost always beat the Asian countries is that we are a better version of them (16, 18, 23 AC won w/o dropping a match. 22 was Dewbai and no Bumrah-Kuldeep).

SENA countries we lose more because certain attributes like pace bowling and batting against pace they are better in certain conditions.

The other group will be even easier

West Indies

South Africa

Scotland

USA

If England doesn't make it then yes. Still not sure as England beat the cr@p out of 2 minnows they've to face. Also, USA is not a done deal. US will most likely have to beat Ireland as Pak will most likely end up with a higher NRR after facing Canada and Ireland. But yeah the stars are aligning for a repeat of 2016 semi against WI.

That's why I used the word "potential". But NZ's NRR is in tatters and both WI and Afg have a huge cushion. I would be shocked if NZ gets to the next round ahead of WI and Afg

From India's perspective ,NZ should lose against WI. That will make their journey in the next round much easier. With India, Australia, BD, Afghanistan in one group India can afford to drop the usual match against Australia and still qualify for the Semis where they will meet WI or SA.

Plus we get to avoid Aussies in semis if we make it there. It'll be Windies who'll have the pleasure of caning us like they did in 2016 :agree:

Our semis venue would be Guyana so just unleash Kuldeep, collar chewer and Axar and jadeja on any team .

But of course we'll get thumped at the batting paradise that is Barbados in the final.

Not the collar chewer. I don't trust him. Play all the other spinners and drop Siraj.

Pakistan playing in new york against Canada is good. Win margins will not be insane. They play Ireland in florida where it is a batting track which irish batters love playing in.
