Look at how many 2 match series we played during Sachin's peak years, we never ever played 5 match series, it was always 2 match and 3 match. Getting to play a 5 match series against same opposition on same kind of pitch/country is a huge boon which lets you rake in points. Sachin never got this chance. Kohli, Ponting etc played a ton of 5 match series which helped them rake in points. Sachin simply didnt.

That's true as well.

 

Only from 2014 we became a 5 match team vs England and this time 5 match team vs Aus.

 

WI played a lot of longer series into the 90s due to legacy.

 

Pak have been downgraded to a 2-3 test team

True. At the time BCCI and Indian cricket weren't the financial powerhouses and barely got more than 2 or 3 match series. By the time we started getting longer series in 2000s, Tendulkar was past his prime.

Peaking hard in the RIGHT series or for the RIGHT duration is more valuable than consistent scoring.

 

For example, Cook peaked HARD during 2 of the toughest tours - Aus & India.

Result - series win

 

Root is the better bat than Cook but the latter ended up giving English fans their fondest memories.

 

Lara peaked HARD during Aus tour of WI 1998

 

Result - series draw (or else Aus would have thrashed WI)

 

Pujara peaked HARD during 2018 tour.

 

Result - series win

 

Tendulkar peaked HARD during Sharjah 1998 carrying a lame duck team.

 

Result - series win

 

Yuvi peaked HARD during 2007 and 2011 WC

 

Result - series win (no one gives a damn about Yuvi's average)

 

Peak rating is not a useless stat. But yeah, it can be quite misleading if used wrongly.

 

- Botham's peak as an AR was probably unmatched by anyone (maybe except Sobers).

 

- Mushtaq Ahmed in his peak was a better spinner than ALL spinners except Warne & Murali (his body of work was insane for 4 years). 5 wickets per game with 19-21 average in SA, NZ & Aus and 26 average in Eng. Unreal dominance.

 

It matters tho (maybe not ranking points wise but impact wise).

 

Spot on! Stats without context doesn't mean much. Same way the peak also needs to have added context such as... 1. Who was the opponent and context of the series (BGT or some random Tests against WI and SL)? 2. How long was the peak? 3. What was the overall average and performances outside of the peak? (if peak was the only insane year, doesn't mean much) etc.
