'If Virat Kohli batted instead of Shubman Gill, he would've slammed a century': India captain told to avoid aggression

@Adamant you seriously rate Kohli's 80 against Aussies in this year's CT better that highly? Dwarshuis, Ellis, Connolly, Sangha, I mean who are these guys?

Tendulkar retirement because it was end of the era (VVS, Dravid retired a year and a half before him, even Sehwag in 2013 BGT).

Almost all our highly rated batsmen are 4th innings chokers, even those with better numbers never finished the chases. That is why we have the worst 4th innings chasing record among top 8 teams.

Pant may be the sole exception. Even in Mumbai test against NZ last year, he almost singlehandedly chased it down before getting a howler from TV umpire Reiffel.

Graeme SMith is the greatest 4th innings chaser in History.  But if we look at the difficulty of the pitches some were absolutely dreadful. I think worst is Sunil Gavaskar's 96 pitch. Near unplayable on day 5. Man scored 96 runs on that minefield. Tendulkar's 136 came on a true wicket. bit of everything for everyone.  That was quality knock. TOo bad he ended on the wrong side.  There are some quality drawn matches too

 India 183/6 chasing  408.

Tendulkar: Most of my scoring strokes were in the nature of punches played with minimum risk. My fifty came up but it did not excite me. The match was far from saved and that was the goal.

Smith: He played one shot that's among the best I've ever seen. Devon was bowling really quick and got one to kick from a length towards Tendulkar's chest. He got on the back foot, kept his left elbow nice and high, and drove it back past Dev [Malcolm] for four. You usually pull or cut off that length. You certainly don't get on your toes and hit it back from where it came for four. Not unless you're a genius, that is. Barry Richards used to do exactly the same thing in our back garden in Durban.

Tendulkar: When I passed 90, it was obvious that the thought of scoring a hundred would start to affect me. After all, it would be my first international century and the crowd had already started expecting it from me. I reminded myself of what had happened in New Zealand and was conscious not to repeat the same mistake. There was still some time left in the day's play and England could press for victory if I got out.

Cape Town 2017 test was another big miss, target of 210 only and they were without Steyn who got injured in first innings, so just a 3 man bowling attack, Morkel was also finished by then...so basically Philander and Rabada. 280 in Centurion next test was doable, but Ngidi took a 6fer. Teams like Aus and Eng would have walked those chases. Edgbaston 2018, Southampton 2018. Only Perth 2018 was difficult because of the cracks.

People like Manju spout nonsense all the time, chasing small totals has been a problem for every Indian side. No need to undermine just Gill while lionising ex-players.

If not for Pant, Adelaide 2003 would have been our highest 4th innings chase outside Asia for the last 50+ years. That is India's batting legacy.

Gill is a decent chaser. Did well in India against England in a very tricky chase. I infact switched off feeling that INdia would lose it. Jurel and Gill played fantastically well and finished the chase. Also Gabba test. I think it was more to do with timing of his entry point.  It is always not good to start in the last session against new ball.

Last 5 years 4th innings chase and won the match

Yeah, he was brilliant in Gabba, clutch in Ranchi. Missed out in Hyderabad, Mumbai, Mirpur, this test. Even Chennai T1 in 2021 was drawable, we had all 10 wickets on D5 on a patta, but Anderson wrecked us there.....I remember there were talks of India going for the 400+ target there lol.

Want to know where he scored the other 4th innings ton - just don't look it up :bebored:

Basin Reserve 2014, BMac 300 match.

Funnily enough, Kohli was out caught behind early in that innings but luckily escaped, no DRS either. If not for umpire's mercy there, we would have somehow lost that test as well. But in first test we got some bad decisions against us, one important one being Rahane's LBW in that runchase.

To all the Tendulkar fans out here, let's test your aukaad, show me one match winning knock of Sachin against non minnows in an icc world cup ko.

Actually just tell me one icc ko knock that was better than Kohlis 90 odd vs Aus in CT this year.

Sachin did score 100 itself in what you call first mini WC those days when it was actually KOs vs Aus

The situation when he came in was around 30ish for 2.

Sharma and Gill got out on same bowlers, if not for Kohli we would have one less ct title.

I looked at that scorecard and wasn’t surprised when there was no name of Mcgrath in that lineup. No Shane Warne as well.

Kasprowicz, Fleming and Julien were the 3 pacers.

The problem is I specifically mentioned icc tournaments, that wasn’t one.

That was an ICC event. Precursor to CT, RSA's only white ball ICC trophy.

1998 wasn't a good year for Warne against Sachin, lucky for him he escaped another mauling.

That was one, Kohli scored vs top bowlers of Aus at CT SF?

NZ where BMac scored 300 after Kohli dropped the catch?

Bing bing bing - that's the reason why I mentioned don't look it up! He cost us the game & scored a match "saving" ton on the flattest of NZ decks we've faced in the last 15-20 years, but we should've won that game easily if not for the worst slipper we've had in 50 years
