Prices can be raised. The capping was to restrict 3-4x increase other airlines did to take advantage of people's misery in this situation

Price gouging  should not be allowed. The govt should fine those airlines but everybody is corrupt to core.

How can he sack CEO of a private company? :hmmmm2:

He probably thinks he owns all the airlines in India.

It also shows the kind of nonsense businesses have to put up with.

I do not think he will. He is MUCH better than the typical dehati politicians across the board. He is just posturing to placate the angry travellers.

This is exactly what it is- back of napkin calculations only.

Why wasn't this brought to the DGCA back in 2024 itself? They could have made it clear that they won't be hiring instead of deliberately creating chaos.

His 'Back of the napkin' is to befool himself.

^^Indigo's profits are 5000-8000 crores range. 200 additional pilots would cost 150-200 cr. It wouldn't affect profits by much.

Indigo's CEO is complicit in this. This harassment and suffering of upto 5 lac passengers should not go unpunished.

More I learn about this, more I understand. Aviation industry is corrupt to the core. And it is so muddled that you wouldn't know who is avenging for what.

However. Here is the thing. I don't care what is bottomline impact. If Airline is willing to compromise on passenger safety by compromising on rest for Pilot. An amendment brought about by pilots association when they approached the court in 2012.

The amendment was known 18 months in advance. Min rest criteria has absolutely killed the pilots. I say this as someone related to pilots. Doesn't change absolute corruption in DGCA.

I am not sure if Indian consumer will react positively for extra fare for improved safety.

I think indigo knew it and dilly-dallied the implementation to this day.

It also has 75k crores of debt. And in september it went into 2k crores of loss.  The reason must be something else.

But still, if it is just 200 crores, they should have hired pilots and be done with it.

First of all, the range for the need for additional pilots is around 200-1000+. The numbers going around are in 900-1000+ range.

If talking about maintaining and sustaining operations over the next few years, difficult on a “net” margin Indigo currently has (which has been negative in many months too).

The back of the napkin calculation is still better than any calculations govt babus and politicians can even bother to do.

Indigo is in this situation because of the rules created by the corrupt and inept GOI babus and politicians.

If we are talking about maintaining and sustaining full operations (not a temporary fix), the numbers thrown around are 900-1000+.

https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/economy/can-indigo-hire-900-pilots-numbers-show-airline-has-never-hired-on-such-scale-13720060.html/amp

It is extremely difficult to hire and train on such a scale competent pilots esp. in a short timeframe (will need to look overseas). If you somehow hire and throw them on planes, it can even create more safety concerns.

PS

Last week, IndiGo submitted a detailed manpower plan to the DGCA outlining its target of adding 158 pilots by February 10 and a further 742 pilots by December 2026. Overall, the airline has projected the need to hire about 300 captains and 600 junior first officers over the next year - Indian Express”.

The Hub and Spoke model is employed in India too.

The way it works for Indigo or Air India: A pilot is rostered on 3 round trips in a day. For lucky ones its 2 round trips.

For eg: A Delhi Mumbai Delhi Flight. Starting early morning. At Mumbai the flight is cleaned and refueled. Limited rest for the pilot. He flies back to Delhi. A break for a few hours + lunch, and the same to and fro again. Again a break for a few hours and a final Delhi Mumbai Delhi.

Spend the night at a hotel close to the IGI Airport and follow the same schedule again.

This is how Indigo runs most of their flights. Air India used to too, but they started brining in fresh pilots at some venues after the DGCA guidelines 2 years ago.

Is this idiot from BJP or TDP and he is the minister.

Were they sleeping when Indigo did not comply with increase in pilots.

Just seems to be  a jumla to placate angry customers.

Surprisingly (not really) no media guy asked him how he's going to pull that off.
