2012 was a hyped squad, and they beat Aussies in the final, in Australia. Unmukt Chand's team. No big name emerged from that bunch. 

 

My favorite squad was 2006 one (lost a cracking final against Pooks), gave us 3 future legends in Jadeja, Pujara, Rohit. 

 

 

2016 was the strong as well and were looking to win without fuss but failed badly in Final. Sarfaraz,Washington, Pant,Kishan. Avesh,Khaleel..

Dhoni and Ashwin are prime examples. Former was juggling his TC life with cricket when he was a teenager, Ashwin was playing tennis ball cricket in gullies and Marina beach. Among more recent examples, Chakri began his professional cricket career at 25 and is now the world's number 1 ranked T20I bowler. 

 

Don't think even past legends like Dravid, Dada, Kumble, Laxman played U-19 WC.

I think first u19 happened in 1988. It didn't happen next 10 years. But back then Ranji and irani trophy were gold standard for selection.

Dhoni wasn't picked for u19 wc 2000 squad. He was playing u19 then.

But having 3-4 good players from each u19 team plus obviously the late bloomers means you can reach a point where you have a quality pool of 40-50 players and even injuries don’t really matter as the other guys are as good.

It was Chawlaji vs Pakistan that day, both with ball and bat. Around that time I was convinced Chawla was going to be our future. He bamboozled Sachin in a Challenger Trophy game around that time. 

 

Life is so funny, Chawla is same age as Jadeja and 2.5 years younger than Ashwin.

Bumrah did play for Gujarat u19 but because u19 WC is played once in two years, many players miss out on that. Mayank Yadav didn't play u19 WC but did play Delhi u19.

Thanks for the info, I didn't know that. I was aware of the 1988 WC because Atherton and Hussain mention that often in their SKY Show, Athers was the skipper. Am aware of 2000 edition because we won, Reetinder Singh Sodhi became a household name, and it also had Yuvi, Kaif. Now that you mentioned, I checked and yeah, straight 1998 after 88.
