Gurnoor averages 27 in First Class Cricket. With almost 3 wickets per match.  And he has done well in A team games recently.

The team is looking for tall, hit the deck pacers because we are not doing that well in the 2nd innings away from home since 2023. [ After Bumrah's 2nd back problem and Shami getting old ]

And Gurnoor is the best tall, hit the deck, bounce bowler we have available among newbies.

We gave good new ball pacers in Bumrah, Siraj and Akashdeep.

It is quite simple really.

It is way too simplistic way to select a test match bowler.  It is fine for ODIs. Anyway i doubt he will be part of the playing XI.  Siraj, Prasidh, Reddy will  form the fast bowling unit. Dubey/Suthar/Sundar might form the spin options.

Gurnoor Brar has 52 wickets in 18 matches .

Gurnoor is not among the top wickets taker in Ranji season.

Aquib has taken 60 wickets in 10 matches this season and has been consistent in last 2,3 seasons. He deserved to be in the squad in home series against Afghanistan.

How many top Ranji Trophy wicket takers have done well in test cricket ??

Bumrah had picked 92 wickets from 28 FC games before test debut. @ 3.29 wickets per match. Average 25.7.

There were many pacers who had better stats in Ranji. And if that was the main criterion then Bumrah would not have played tests.

Ranji Trophy is a long winding tournament with insufficient gaps between matches, pitches which favour bowlers who float it up instead of hitting the deck hard and batters with very poor techniques. Hence pacers who bowl within themselves, float it up and stay fit as a result become top wickets takers.

While Test matches against top teams often need bowling with a lot of effort and intensity, hitting the deck hard to prise out wickets.

A team series are much closer to tests and ODIs compared to Ranji Trophy and VHT.

If he can serve well in Test it is fine. But i still believe Kartik taygi should be part of the set up ahead of this guy atleast in LOI.  He finds himself in both LOI and Test squad. In t20 he goes well over 10 an over.

https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/sports/cricket/news/who-is-gurnoor-brar-spotted-by-shubman-gill-impressed-shikhar-dhawan-with-pace-being-groomed-by-ashish-nehra/articleshow/131197663.cms

Based on this article it says "Spotted by Shubman Gill". Both punjabi/GT connection?  It is not that easy to find a spot in India squad without performing in IPL. So it will raise eye brows of people when domestic performers have numbers on their side.

If Gurnoor can be selected for both test and odi ,why he didn't get any games for GT.

Gurnoor didn't play any IPL games , was not in list of highest wickets takers(less than 15 wickets),but is preferred over other just because he played some A matches.

Those who performed in that A matches Ie Kotian is completely ignored.

There can be a favour to GT players, not denying that.
Manav Suthar, Sai Kishore and Nishant Sindhu were seen as replacement for Jadeja...coincidently all 3 are in GT.
Manav Suthar got the oppoty ahead of the two as he seems more well rounded. Sai is more of a bowler, Sindhu is seen a batsman first.

Washington Sundar has been around Test team from quite some time, he is being seen as someone who can grow into red ball skills like Ashwin did. He too is in GT at the moment. Kotian is a steady performer but so are the likes of Saurabh Kumar or Shams Mulani.

Gurnoor, Prasidh, Siraj...all 3 are in GT as well.

With Bumrah resting and Jadeja injury....option was to go back to Shami but selectors think he is too old now. Akashdeep and Harshit are injured as well.
Aaqib got a hard deal but seems his lack of pace is going against him. Plus he isn't that tall as well.

There is inconsistency in selections. He is picked purely based on physical attributes. Atleast that is what i think. He also played in Irani Trophy directoy. Wish we had height based selection in the 2000s. Agarkar would have never played. All lead to Shubman Gill connection.

India has been sucking balls in Tests recently.  If there is any biased selection which leads to more catastrophe fans won't really take it easily.

Most fans on "X" are asking the question on who is this Gurnoor Brar...never saw in IPL.
Sums up what they know man, if someone doesn't play in IPL...he doesn't exist is the messaging which I am getting.
Key thing still is if they'll play him. Coz Siraj and Prasidh are likely to be sure shot starters, while Nitish as the 3rd pacer. Washy and Suthar may play as spinners
With the above bowling attack you'll have batting till no 9.

Had it been a 2 Test series, Gurnoor may have gotten an opportunity. Now the chances are less considering GT will qualify for top 4 and hence may still play Siraj till the last moment.

Aquib is unsuitable for the conditions simply.  Bowling in mid 120's won't cut it against International standard players.

He may have some utility on a damp Wellington surface for us but that's about it.

Gurnoor is a long term prospect and a high potential pick that has come through the system.

Indian sports journalism is gutter level and so is Indian media by and large.

Playing Sadeja Axar Washy type gimmicky non frontline spinners has a lot to do with our failures and getting outbowled by opposition spinners who arrive with more guile and variations.

i liked sushant  mishra and Mayank Yadav yeseterday...both should be looped in soon under ZAK Or Morne morkel as i truly believe they are our best right arm and left arm bets.

Prince is average , he wont suceed big time. gurnoor should suceed if he is hard working and can maintain 138 to 145k pace .

Performances in A teams is usually taken as a pre-cursor to selection in tests and ODIs.

In Unofficial Tests Vs Australia A  a few months back, Gurnoor had picked 8 wickets from 2 matches ( just 3 innings ) and averaged 25.5. He was the highest wicket taker for the series among both teams along with Suthar. ( another bowler whose selection is being questioned ).

I can understand if one questions Gurnoor's ODI selection. I myself would have preferred Ashok Sharma who may not have played for India A yet but is a 150 k pacer with great wicket taking ability in List A.

@Mosher, @Suhaan, @singhvivek141, @Lone Wolf, @tapandrun, @Sandz, @MK55

i am delighted with Gurnoor's selection in both odi and tests.  ASHOK , Mayank , Sushant need a bit of training more and soon will play for INDIA.

good they did not pick bhuvi....let him relax.

Sushant can become good T20 pacer.

Domestics performance includes A games, performance there against the best from overseas is also a good indicator

Aquib may have some utility in damp conditions of Lords or first innings on some Kiwi wickets but come June in here ,we also need to see how other options perform

Ashok Sharma has played, quite a number of FC games, list A,SMAT shown capacity to bowl long spells at fair clicks

Was quite accurate in the games he played this IPL season,Indian bowlers anyway take their time to come to their own

If we remain impatient we will never be able to get over pseudo swing and line length specialists

Who is being impatient  ?

I think it is a case of casual fans treating real international cricket as a video game. Look at Ranji stats and pick team.

Not even the casual fans,we have seen, the most learnt ones including those who have played the game for a fair period dont see the pattern that many of these so called swingers who are believed to be disciplined are the most indisciplined and mostly fail to exploit the conducive conditions

Once the conditions get better for batsmen, they don't have other options to fall back

Bro ashok should play for india A. He can be deadly with reverse at that pace

Exactly !

It's strange that Ashok is not even in the India-A ODI squad.

Ashok should be prepared for tests in Asia too. He is skiddy quick and if he can attack the stumps at skiddy 150 k with reverse swing, he will be unplayable. Needs guidance in this direction.

We have seen Pradosh ranjan paul doing well for INdia scoring a century in SA. He left the radar. Padikkal absolutely bottled against SA A . Averaging 10 runs in 4 innings against SA A.  He is with our test squad. There are many guys who get sidelined.  Ruturaj was the highest run getter SA A tour to India. He also played very well in first class this season on tough wickets saving his side. He gets sidelined because of IPL.

Kotian got 8 wickets in 1 test at an average of 13.72.  Manav averaged 37 in the same series picking 3 wickets.  Why wasn't Kamboj played? Kamboj averaged 19 in the series against SA A where Gurnoor averaged 25.

In 2024/25 series India A tour to Australia A , Mukesh kumar was the best bowler from both sides. 2 matchs 11 wickets averaging 16.18.  Many bowler, batsmen have done well in A tours never got a chance.

Let us not invent reasons for hsi selection as we already have why he got picked.  Let us hope he does well. If wer going to ignore  medium height 130k bowlers we should be ignoring Akash deep as well who won us the test. These kidn of arbirtrary rules will make us miss actually good bowlers. Everyone needs to go through some level before discarding. Atleast A tour chance.

Nehra played a big role in his push. Why dind't he give him chance already in the IPL if he is that good. Why did that left arm seame Arshad r play ahead of him? After all GT is preparing green wickets that suit their fast bowlers.

Marco Jansen outbowled our seamers in the 2nd test.
