Abhishek Sharma breaks T20I record, becomes fastest batter to hit 100 sixes

IND vs ENG: Abhishek Sharma became the fastest batter to reach 100 T20I sixes by deliveries faced, eclipsing the records during the 1st T20I between India and England.

Abhishek Sharma on Wednesday became the fastest batter to smash 100 sixes in T20Is during the first match between India and England. Abhishek opened the batting alongside Sanju Samson and walloped two maximums in 9 balls, reaching 100 sixes in T20Is in only 785 deliveries.

The left-hander from Punjab surpassed West Indies’ Evin Lewis, who had smashed 100 sixes in 789 deliveries in his career. Among players from Full-Member nations, New Zealand’s Finn Allen ranks next, having reached the landmark in 871 balls in February earlier this year.

Abhishek broke the Indian record held by former T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav, who had raced to 100 sixes in the format in 1007 deliveries.

Abhishek (48 innings) stands the second-quickest to the feat in terms of innings, only behind Lewis (42).

Having made his T20I debut for India in July 2024, Abhishek has emerged as the most explosive opening batter in the world in the previous World Cup cycle and ranks second in the ICC T20I Rankings for batters. While he had a forgettable run in the World Cup earlier this year, Abhishek dazzled with a half-century in the final against New Zealand in Ahmedabad in March.

Having amassed over 1450 career runs, Abhishek’s 190-plus strike rate ranks the highest among all batters with at least 1000 runs in the T20I format.

Overall, Abhishek’s teenager teammate Vaibhav Sooryavanshi holds the record as the quickest batter to reach 100 sixes in all T20 cricket, reaching the landmark in only 515 deliveries during his record-breaking IPL 2026 season with the Rajasthan Royals.

Fastest batters to reach 100 sixes in T20Is (by balls)

785- Abhishek Sharma
789 – Evin Lewis
848 – Karanbir Singh
871 – Finn Allen
931 – Tim David
956 – Faisal Khan
963 – Colin Munro
1007 – Suryakumar Yadav
1058 – Rovman Powell
1071 – Chris Gayle

Give him Axar Patel spot I think at lower order.

Screaming for it,he can do it even better

Harness whatever potential is there for those conditions

AS in his first 67 t20s had 1476 runs @135.04 sr with 61 sixes hitting each at every 17.92 balls.

Next 132 t20s he amassed 4436 runs @196.81 sr with 312 sixes hitting each at every 7.22 balls.

He basically turned to Sooryavanshi mode b4 Sooryavanshi did!

Coz initially he played lower down the order. He was pushed to the top order after 4-5 seasons down the order and things changed. His game is suited to the top of the order just like Sooryavanshi. Their game is built to maximize PP overs with just 2 fielders outside the circle. That's why they should open and not pushed down the order. Their high risk game not gonna succeed in the lower order when you have 5 fielders outside the circle and all those one or two bounce fours will result in dismissals.

Just imagine if Abhishek and Suryavanshi open the innings together. If they manage to play through first 6 overs, the game would effectively be over for the opposing team.

90 runs in 6 overs.

Yep, and even if one failed, the other will take over. This stupid Iyer experiment is setting us back in multiple things.

Mark my words, we are adopting the Pak way of tuk tuk stat padding, middle order and it will yeild the same result in the neft t20 world cup.

Nope. It'll kill his career. Abhishek's game is built to maximize PP overs and take on the bowling with just 2 fielders outside the circle. He used to play down the order in IPl for 4-5 seasons and he struggled with a SR of 135 and an average around 20 coz his game led to cheap dismissals. All those one or two bounce 4s we see from him during PP overs led to easy catching opportunities for the opponents.

His and Sooryavanshi's game is all about hitting the ball over the top of fielders in the circle. And not every delivery is hit for a 6 and many land just inside the boundary or just clear the fielders. Those shots would lead to dismissals if they bat lower down the order. Or they'll need to change their approach and batting style to play along the ground more often which and will take away their strength. No point in compromising the 2 best PP hitters we have and play them at the top.

Even in ODIs, it holds true. Look at Abhishek's List A stats. They're pathetic - an average of 33. And if we push him down in ODIs the average will go down even further. This is like making Tilak a ODI player when we all see he's not fit to be one.

Only Jaiswal is a multi-format batter in the team and Sooryavanshi would be another. Rest are suited to only 1-2 formats.

No,one can try him there as we lack an attacking spin AR at that position, there is no harm in trying

If he clicks he will solve our problems,if he doesn't move on from him,let Jaiswal play the other two formats consistently then you can make your opinion, lol

By your reasoning,Jaiswal too has a below average List A SR,and SR matters a lot these days in loi cricket.Since his style is reminiscent of 90s cricket, does that mean he should never replace Rohit?

Abhishek's bowling is not good enough to warrant that spot. He's neither a good middle order batter nor a bowler who can give 5-6 overs. Plus we all know about his fielding/catching skills. He's a purely T20 PP batter.
