Nervous Kela is "versatile" according to his fan boys lol.  He can choke from 1 to 7 different batting positions. Having said that Kishan is alreayd there in the set up. He is a thick buddy of Gill. So he is not going anywhere.

Useless sundar will keep failing like he does and a few months before the world cup, selectors will pick Sadeja citing eggsperience.

Rishabh has played 100+ limited over matches so he got decent chance to prove himself, in this era you have too much talent especially for limited overs so no point in trying him. He should completely focus on test cricket and try to achieve 6-7k runs @ 44-45 average with current impact and he can finish as GOAT wicket keeper.

Pant was doing well in LOIs before his accident. His 125 against England chasing was one of the better innings played by a middle order bat. India were 38/3 and then 72/4 and still ended up chasing 260 at a RR of 6.18. Brilliant knock and a great partnership with Hardik. The the accident happened and he has still I feel not gotten back to his best. It is unfortunate when you have to go through such a traumatic event at your peak but it is taking longer for him than probably even he would have thought. He is an exceptional talent and I hope he gets back to how he was pre-injury. He should never play T20Is for India again but I feel he should always be in the picture for ODIS.

He also brings in a leftie in the top 5 batters, which is needed considering we are gonna be a righty dominated XI ar the top and be circumspect to the SLAs.

I would ideally move him to no 4 and Iyer to no 5. 

 

Only question mark will be the running coordination between Kohli & Pant. Hope we dont see runouts during crucial moments.

Pant at number 4 is a great option, he breaks the lineup of RHB.

 

Hope selectors grow wiser and we see him there.

Unless pant gets a modicum of self control and adjusts his game , I wouldnt pick him for a icc tournament. 

 

He can and does play clutch knocks but the amount of times he loses his head when chasing spinners does me in. 

 

I think test cricket is the best format for him because he seems to buckle down more and play innings there. The limited overs doesn't work for him.

2) Bowlers bowl defensively in LOIs not in Tests

It's bit of why Yuvi couldn't crack tests while being an LOI great thingy

He's very predictable in ODIs. Also a low threshold for patience.

 

I'd rather have Jurel play in LOi than him.

It's a bit of why Sehwag was a great player in tests when he was just about average in ODIs

Right word is tempo. He never has a tempo for this short format.  Either gets stuck or  play few shots and perishes. His dot ball percentage in IPL 2025 wsa staggering 50%. Nobody was even closer to that number. Even in this year edition his tempo was questionable.

Tempo and the other word is temperament. 

 

Pant is like sehwag as someone who wants to take the game and then dictate the play. Tests allow them to time to do that. There's always the ball pressure in LOI which is on their mind. 

 

Both sehwag and pant are players who should have flourished in limited overs , but they haven't

Precisely... Yuvi is a Converse example but Sehwag one is bang on.

 

Warner becoming a test cricketer is a bit of Sehwag influence too.  He said to him in IPL in DD days that all his shots which are dots in T20 cricket will give him sure shot boundaries in test cricket... As there would be no fielders there coz of catchers will be  behind him 

 

Vaibhav in lower middle order can also be a game breaker in future if he gets more mature and cracks ODI cricket as well.

I do think that vaibhav would be better off playing plain tests and t20s. Getting him into the ODIs is a different thing.

Pant is not as good as Sehwag though in ODIs. Sehwag beign an opener has provided fast starts enough time. Difference is Sehwg is a 4 hitter not a 6 hitter. Also he doesn't play funky shots. All his shot executions are exactly the same across the formats. Just that field set is different. Especially third man . Infact they started having ODI field for Sehwg in tests to counter his stroke play.
