If KL Rahul can be keeper for world cup and Champions trophy. Pant sure can do better than him. you need release shots in shorter formats which is the reason why Pant falters. In tests he can pick and choose the ball and bowler.
New guy Posted August 21 Posted August 21 People keep confusing ODIs with t20, before his injury, for nearly 2 years, Pant was averaging over 40 in ODIs with 110 strike rate. This included a series winning unbeaten 100 against england in a final match of a series.

He has SR of 106 with avg of 34 in odis he has played and his 125 is still one of the best 100s I have seen from an Indian batsmen in England. Captain and coaches have asked to become another Dhoni in whiteball cricket. IMO if he is left alone he will be just fine in odis. Unlike other bozos we saw in England , he would not be intimidated by pace and bounce. Edited August 21 by putrevus

Jadeja was a vital cog in the wheel for the team for a long time. He's dispensable now in ODIs but for a good 10 years , he provided brilliant fielding , able runs at the end and tight restrictive bowling. Lord 1

Apart from CT 2013 where even Ashwin bowled well his conribution is very littler in terms of match winning in an actual 50 over game or 20 over game. I am including the 5 or 6 T20 world cups he played as well.

His best position is top order but there are too many contenders. Hardik too has plenty of failures as a finisher but he doesn't give a damn about those knocks and is happy with the ones where he does well. He and Dhoni type of batsmen cover up their strikerates by picking a particular bowler. Pant doesn't do that. He treats Starc, Rabada and others as same. Plus he walks off the ground dejected as if he had done a grave mistake compare that with Pandya and Dhoni. You bat as a finisher you are bound to fail more often than not. tapandrun 1

Thats where a multi utility cricketer is different specially if he can save 10-20 runs in the field everytime He was dropped in 2017 but came back in Asia Cup when Hardik was injured to balance the side Would say he has been better than Chahal, Bhuvi, KL etc even in Odis
Nikhil_cric Posted August 22 Posted August 22 No. You can't pick randomly. Anyway, Iyer's the one who should be on the chopping block, not KL

If you exclude associate sides his strike rate goes down to 80. Never played for team's cause both in 2019 and 2023 world cups. We have 4 world cup worth of stats. We shouldn't read too much into hits "not outs" in CT agianst understrength teams on the same venues.

KL has been far better than that.

No he is not. He sucks under pressure. We have 4 world cup samples 2 T20 world cups 2 ODI world cups. Iyer was the best batsman in world cup semi final. He was the one who did the finishing kick.

He is the least trustworthy guy in ICC Events.

Iyer sucks the worst , Rohit and Virat won't be the right age profile by 2027. When you look at that in context, KL is the least of India's issues from a batting POV
tapandrun Posted August 22 Posted August 22 (edited) Here is table summarizing Rishabh's batting scenario splits: Batting Scenario Innings Actually Batted Total Runs Batting Average Strike Rate Total Balls Faced Batting First (1st Innings) 14 598 42.71 112.62 531 Batting Second (Chasing) 13 273 21.00 102.25 267 Overall ODI Career 27 871 33.50 106.22 798 His 125* run chase accounts for an entire 45.7% of his total career runs when batting second. If you remove that single performance, his chasing average over the remaining 12 innings falls to a mere 12.33. he has scored 68.2% of his total career ODI runs against just two teams: England and the West Indies. When facing any other international side, his average drastically sinks to roughly 21.50 with zero centuries Out of his 117 career ODI boundaries, 83 of them (70.9%) came exclusively against England and the West Indies.he has only managed 7 sixes across 12 innings when facing Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and Sri Lanka combined. His mode of dismissal massive chunk of those catches happen deep on the boundary line—at long-on, long-off, or deep mid-wicket—directly resulting from mistimed lofted shots Edited August 22 by tapandrun Vk1 and rollingstoned 2

You are talking more about watching him in t20s. At number 4 he would be perfect as he will break up all RHB. He has played 4 odis in last four years .The last 4 came just after his injury. They need to give him two series and see how he does at number 4. rollingstoned 1
jf1gp_1 Posted August 29 Posted August 29 I certainly want him in ODIs specially during WC. Rahul is a makeshift keeper, who makes a few mistakes every game. He will (not IF) drop a few critical chances during next WC which we will regret. I just hope senses prevail and Pant is brought back in playing XI even if at the expense of Rohit.
