Raghav_12 Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 Not sure. A lot of people will be swayed by the international recognition that Rehman got (other India music director's woudn't have got a fraction of that). But that is probably more because of the current world scenario's which allows very easy interaction between different countries. If we look at indian context only, I would say he would eventually become greatest Indian music composer. The kind of preparation, planning he does for his music is really amazing. I have heard music studio's which he has set up in Chennai are kind of best in Asia. Disclaimer : I am not much of a music buff.
zen Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 Sd burman was better music director than rd burman.I wont put rd burman in top 5 of greatest music directors. here is my top 5 1 Ar rahman 2 Sd burman 3 Naushad 4 Laxmikant Pyarelal 5 Jatin lalit That's quite a list :giggle:
satishg Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 Ilayaraja is equally good if not better than Rahman! I have not heard many of the other musicians listed in this thread so i really cant comment but i definitely do think that there must have been better musicians than Rahman in India. Rahman is quite lucky to be in an era where he has had a far greater reach than any of the other greats. I do however concur on yoda's post about how Rahman having made an effect all over India, but that alone cannot be the metric to judge him as the greatest Indian music director. In the end i guess it is purely subjective.
Zelig Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 In a way, I feel sorry for the Northies for not having good a chance to listen to the soothing tunes of this genius.
Clarke Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 This sounds like one of those Bradman-Tendulkar comparisons; Rehman & RD are both bloody awesome, end of story. BTW why's the Laxmi-Pyare duo not as well recognized as RD ?
Cricketics Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 Shankar Mahdevan along with his 2 mates are equally good and have produce some equally good stuff if not better.
The Outsider Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 SD Burman would be my pick (after Bappi Lahiri and Anu Malik, of course). RD Burman and AR Rehman would be a tie at number 2, but SD Burman was just in a class of his own, IMO. A lot of RD's initial work was completely 'inspired' by SD.
rkt.india Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 RD Burman has been a big copycat along with Anu Malik and Pritam... Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy is as good as Rehman SD Burman is the best father of RD Burman Take a look at this: http://www.itwofs.com/

Mariyam Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 ARR is no doubt an all time great, but I think he's deteriorated over the years. He was better in the first half of his career than what he is now. Roja, Dil se, Rangeela is better than Saathiya, Lagaan and Slumdog Millionaire in my view.

Mariyam Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 he is about to win his 3rd oscar and he is stilll not at his best .this tells u what a legend he is. I know what you are trying to say, but don't let the # of Oscars decide how good/bad a music director is. Especially for an Indian musician. Those of us who have been listening to ARR over the years know that Slumdog Millionaire is nowhere near his best.

Rd burman is soo overrated. His music was really average and he was copycat just like his shishya anu malik.I think most icf members are bengalis thats y they are rating him soo highly.
