Venky has won us important matches in ODI's also Remember WC 96/99 vs. Pak - for that alone he get my respect.

While both Mithun & VK dont deserve to be on this trip, I feel Mithun would be a better option for Test Matches. VK is just a ODI bowler...dont know if both of them play in the next practice match.

The response in this thread has been pretty ridiculous. Of course, the headline was written as if just to rile up the fans on this forum. Mithun aims for precision and not speed is a pretty empty comment. Mithun isn't going to go full tilt all the time, but no one really does. Even Shoaib Akhtar did not go full tilt all the time, as he did in that spell against Ponting in Perth. You would tire yourself out. But it is not as if Mithun is holding on to 10kph. If he could bowl at 140kph, he would slip the odd ball out at 140kph. Unless for injury purpose, there is not a bowler who thinks it beneficial to completely do away with an ability to bowl at 140kph. The idea that Prasad and now VK are encouraging bowlers to bowl medium pace is also ridiculous. It lacks evidence. For one, has anyone seen how quick VK runs into the crease, I'm pretty sure he doesn't have too much more pace than he offers in international cricket. Furthermore, the idea that they would encourage others to slow down just because they could not bowl fast is such a stupid idea. The fact that the idea that this happens proliferates through the forum really outlines the stupidity of some members.

dude, when i first saw Mithun at RCB he was bowling in the 135-140 zone. Since Venky became coach he has got slower in every edition i have seen him bowl. You can put it down to a coincidence, cause i dont know what happens behind closed doors. Cause even when Venky has not been there bowlers like slowed down dramatically. Case in point Munaf Patel. From 140 to 125.....

Yeah..Venky was removed from the post of India's bowling coach, because he tried to mess with Ishant Sharma's action and tried to turn him into a swing bowler. Hence the conjucture in this forum that he would have done the same to Mithun too. I think this is a forum for members to voice their opinion on cricketing matters, not on the intelluctual capabilitiies of other members.

Phew. Finally some sense in the thread. :two_thumbs_up:

So rather than assuming that the one time you saw him bowl 135-140kph was a one-off, you'd rather think that an IPL coach who is with a player for 3 months a year has enough of an impact to cause a player to slow down for a whole year. You think Prasad came up to him and said "you will bowl slowly, because I did". That would never happen and if it did, the idea that anyone would listen is madness. Keep in mind that India had Ishant bowl 150kph while Prasad was bowling coach. Or is this because Ishant was disobedient to Prasad? C'mon, be serious!

Case in point Munaf Patel. From 140 to 125.....[/quote'] Everybody cites Munaf. He slowed down because he got injured every other game. Greg Chappell rightly pointed out that he does not have the body for a 145kph career. Moreover, after all the injuries, I'd bet he probably couldn't sustain a spell of 140kph even if he wanted to.

[/quote'] Keep in mind that Venkatesh is also a player who has a lot of say in the activities of the Karnataka ranji team for whom he played and still has a big say over in which Mithun plays. Its not just Mithun, even the likes of Arvind have dropped pace as well. I am pretty sure that Venkatesh Prasad certainly has more of an impact on those players then just the IPL months. While i accept that watching Mithun could be a one off. The length of the IPL season, means that I doubt it was a one off. A lot of matches are played in the IPL by teams. As i remember the likes of Arvind and Mithun were much faster over the IPL season the first i saw them. Everybody has a drop in pace. But you drop maybe 5mph if you are touching 90mph. Nobody would complain if Munaf kept bowling in the 84-85 bracket on a consistent basis. When we toured WI he was bowling at 78-80mph with so many slower balls that i wondered if it was a ploy to reduce his load.Thats a big drop in pace. Maybe if his body gets injured so often, its time to quit a few formats and limit yourself at play one. Aka a Tait. Its the same with Pathan, was a 84-85 bowler who now bowls at 78-80. He is not even 30 as of now. Look at Malinga, made a call to quit the tests cause his body could not handle it. I dont see a significant drop in pace for the ODIs or T20s.

Mithun only played one game in his first IPL season, IIRC. The effect of Prasad may have been great but there is still no reason to suggest he is responsible for their drop in pace. The drop in pace from debut to mid way through an Indian fast bowler's career is a phenomenon which has pre-dated Prasad's coaching and will likely continue after he retires.

Pathan's speed will come up to low 80s mph if he plays a bit without injury. He was not always 84-85mph when younger though. His hat trick is evidence of that.
Look at Malinga' date=' made a call to quit the tests cause his body could not handle it. I dont see a significant drop in pace for the ODIs or T20s.[/quote'] Munaf, even at his best, is nowhere near quick enough to sacrifice a format just so he can bowl his maximum speed which is to touch 140kph a few times in a spell. He did slow down pretty significantly but that is due to both a conscious effort and having to return from injury after injury. He timed the odd ball at 140kph during the World Cup and that just shows that when he has been fit for a while, he can crank it up somewhat.

Venky had decent amount of swing .. Mithun does not have an inch of swing in his deliveries .. a quality bowler needs either pace or swing to be successful .. those who have both like Steyn are extremely successful .. but without either it is a lost case as is the case with Mithun

exactly.I watched some of his matches in 2004-08 n he was neer 140+.even his yorker to Gilly was only 133 kph.at the most hes lost 5kph.thats not huge if hes gt swing

While words are on offer to ease the doubts on Ishant Sharma, the sight of Zaheer Khan is certainly uplifting for the Indian team. The left-arm paceman was all too eager to measure and bowl for close to half an hour over two spells during the intense practice session. For a long time, he kept testing the skills of Virender Sehwag. The Delhi dasher, fresh from his record knock in one-day arena, had to summon all his concentration to counter Zaheer and on one occasion even shouted down the noise from a considerable crowd of Indian supporters who had gathered around the nets. Zaheer is fitter and leaner and looking to last through an entire summer of Australia which he has never been able to do over two previous visits. Young Abhimanyu Mithun also appeared eager and enthused and rapped Sehwag a number of times on his pads. He also induced edges which seemed to upset Sehwag.

Very nice indeed. Hope Mithun keeps it up and be ready should his number be called to trouble the Aussie batsman in Tests. And in the meantime I expect some of the folks here to rut and whine and rant with a view to realize their fantasy of recalling Irfan 'Chuvha' Pathan who probably is busy conducting an interview of two as I type this.
