Dravid_TheWall Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 Australian tracks would be flat with good bounce. Normal deliveries of Johnson would be above waist and higher for Raina. So no. He shouldn't play there. MSD will enjoy batting there as there won't be much swing like Eng and he plays pull/hook well. Pujara or Kohli should get chance. Most our test batsmen play bounce pretty well. Laxman especially regardless of his excellent record v Aus. We struggled in England due to lateral movement.

I have never seen an Indian batsman struggling against an average spinner who is getting thrashed by other batsmen. Overall Raina is not a test material.

I agree regarding Raina as a test batsmen full stop. I felt sorry for the guy in England. He tried hard, good fielder, bowled tight when required but simply doesn't have the test technique. The no6 position has been troublesome since Ganguly left. Ganguly may not have been a great test batsmen but he knew his game and what it took to make a sizeable contribution at no6. Plus he was the leader. Pujara is a more higher middle order batsmen but for now he should be at 6.

And hopefully with some experience he maybe able to adapt to away from home conditions as well which we would badly need once the big-old guns retire.

I have doubts on his ability to bat even on turners in sub-continent

He's still young, has definite potential and great work ethic/attitude. So I wouldnt write him off yet.
Karan114 Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 Absolutely not. Rahane, Kohli or Rohit deserve to play ahead of him. He needs to play more first class cricket. Starting with the ranji matches from 3rd Nov, he should be able to play the first 3 rounds and the last 2 rounds (missing the 2 rounds of matches due to WI ODIs) thats a total of 5 matches and hopefully more in the knock out rounds before he goes for the Aus ODI series. He still has age on his side and the only way he will improve his batting technique is by playing more first class games. This would be most sensible - he really needs some solid, uninterrupted FC cricket to learn how to bat for long periods of time, rather than flay the bowling all the time, as his role as a middle-order ODI batsman demands. He only has eight FC hundreds (including one in Tests) from 113 innings despite making 39 scores of 50+, which says it all.

It is going to be a huge disappointment if either of these inept players are brought into the test side. But it's inevitable that it will happen - Yuvraj is almost certain to get a spot(in the name of experience - yes experience of being mediocre in test matches for close to a decade) and Raina might get in as well. Raina has a chink in his armour as far as test batting is concerned Chink in armor? Pehle armor to ho, tabhi chink banega - guy should be kept in a different city from where any test match is going on.

"Critics can say a lot of things but I know that I have tried to perform the role assigned to me with utmost sincerity. People can say whatever they like but the senior members of the Indian team know my worth and that is what is important for me," Raina told PTI in an interview. Asked about his weakness against short-pitched bowling, the 25-year-old replied that he is working hard to regain his place in the Test side and will go to Australia for a personal training stint. "After the IPL is over, I will take a month's break and then start training again. In fact, I plan to go to Australia accompanied by current Chennai Super Kings physio Tom Simsek for an extensive fitness program. If possible, I might play a few club matches in order to get some good match practice on bouncy pitches," Raina said. "The kind of depth we have in our batting, I normally come out to bat in the 38th or the 40th over. That is the most crucial phase for the batting team where you need to step up the run-rate." "There is competition for a place in the Test squad but now with Rahul Dravid's retirement, one slot has opened up. I would like to score runs and get my spot in the Test squad back." Raina feels that the inclusion of Ravindra Jadeja in the CSK set-up has been a huge boost and they will come all guns blazing at their opponents. "We have a fantastic team. Jadeja's inclusion makes all three departments even more stronger.
