The Philander puzzle

Philander is ordinary. No idea how is cleaning up. To me it shows how pathetic some of the teams are these days, NZ made philander look like malcomn marshall today. He is benefitting from being in a really good team that is always putting pressure on oppo. This allows ordinary players like philander to to do well as well

No. Philander does extraoridnary things ordinarily.

You mean ordinary things extraordinarily I think... :hmmm:
being so consistent and seaming ball both ways from same spot is not really that ordinary ..

Nothing against Philander as is decent bowler. But he has average under 20 but he his no way up to that standard which his average suggests.
Actually, his First Class record in South Africa does suggest an extraordinary bowler. One who is capable of taking wickets at an astonishing rate. It does seem he is a better bowler in South Africa than outside South Africa, but his performances in New Zealand and England show that he is no slouch abroad, even though he wasn't great against Australia. I'm fascinated to see how he does when he plays in the subcontinent.

I reckon the one thing you hold against him is that he does not bowl at 145 kmh+

Surely today's performance cannot be called that. He took wickets too quickly for it to be put down to pressure from the other end.

Bhuvaneswar put so much pressure from one end. What did other bozos do there?

Philander has taken wickets against major test playing nations, give the guy credit. he has line and length , that's the difference and a mark of quality

Most people think Philander is ordinary because he doesn't have pace nor is he a big seamer/swinger of the ball. He moves the ball just enough, what has worked for him is his consistency with line and length. He is Mcgrath type bowler, who'd bowl on same spot whole day without any fuss. Great asset for Saffers especially suits their bowling combination.

No. He is ordinary when you first look at him, nothing outrageous about his bowling, runs in ordinarily with an ordinary approach which everone is aware of, but results are still extraordinary. As someone said, simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.

I remember when i was little and first started watching cricket. Glenn Mcgrarth looked very "ordinary" compared to guys like Allan Donlald, Wasim Akram and Currtly Ambrose. Yet he turned out to be more successfull than any of them. If you can bowl a good line and length consistently, you don't necessarily need to reverse swing or bowl 140+KPH. Mcgrath proved this and Philander is doing it now. Philander isn't ordinary and while it may be too early to call him "great", he does have the potential of becoming a great.

Philander's incredibly low average is bound to go up when he plays more outside SA, especially in the subcontinent. But he'll be the first player on the team sheet in favorable conditions.

No he isn't! He's an amazing new ball bowler who makes the best use of the seam & the conditions. Its not like the batsmen are trying to attack him with the pressure from the other end.
