Now that he has become test captain and with 2 back to back Ashes next year, it will take its toll and anyway we can always hope that once Eng travel to SA or SA travel to England another English captain will fall by the wayside ;)

Cook himself was almost axed if not for a turn around in Ashes test series. If he finds himself in the wrong end of things when he is 34-35. England wont shudder to drop him. The reason you see most Asian batsman as top run scorers in both formats.

Good points....but in recent times England have given a slightly longer rope to players based on name value too.....Strauss and kp(in odi) being a prime example

I reckon he'll end on over 13,000 runs.
Muloghonto Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 Too early to tell. He has time on his side, but IMO, he won't be that prolific in another 4-5 years, when he gets to his mid 30s. English conditions are really unforgiving to aeging openers and Goochie/Boycott were the only exceptions to this. England plays Australia and South Africa more than any other nation and IMO, Cookie would do well to score 40 centuries and 14,000 runs or so. I personally think he will end up with 35-40 centuries and 13,000-14,000 runs. IMO just as good, if not a better candidate as Cookie is Graeme Smith, though again, i don't think he will consistently average 50+ from here on, given that he is a Saffie opener and getting into the mid 30s.

But look at Ponting, if I was told in 2006 that he would play for 6 more years, I would have definitely predicted 15K runs and 50 tons at the least. But that didn't happen. So anything can happen. Let's wait and see.
Manny_Pacquiao Posted December 11, 2012 Posted December 11, 2012 it took tendulkar twice as many years (12) to play the number of tests that this guy has played so far. india didn't play much test cricket in the 90s compared to now. so yeah, if ingerlund keep on playing shitloads of test cricket for the next 10 years, he should have no problem breaking the record for total runs.

I dont want to see a 60 year old Tendulkar wearing Indian colors still trying to protect his record from Cook. This lil dude is crazy, he is so numbers driven, he'll do anything to protect his records. Why are all our ex-cricketers scared of this guy ? Why should they sugar-coat their comments when it comes to Tendulkar ? The worst people have said is that this dude should sit & talk to selectors and he's done that. Tendulkar is very media conscious, esp, when big names talk about him. So if our ex-stars (esp, the likes of Gavaskar, Amarnath, Shastri) go to town on this lil man, he will quit.

There is one Mr Kallis from SA breathing at 44 100s, he is about 2600 runs away from Tendulkar as well, he is still 37 years, can go on for 3 more years. He will beat Tendulkar soon

I still think once a player goes over 37-38ish, they tend to be not as good as they used to be. Sachin himself has gone down the same route.
