Jaddu's bowling is laregly irrelevant in south africa- his darts will not get him more than 5 wickets @ 50 if he played all three tests. You must be kidding me! They won the WC in 1987 and won their first Test series victory since 4 years and had a pretty good 1987 summer. Changes are always gradual, spikes are only anomalies. I am asking for the Aussie model from 1986 when Bob Simpson took over as a coach (I'm sure you're old enough to remember it) - they spend 3 years in oblivion but that doesn't mean we need to slip in the same banana skins as they did.

Sorry? This an uncouth statement. You can't draw prophetic conclusions from data of a different team and extrapolate to a different team. You need to decide what is BEST for you. However, even considering your argument I would rather prefer a 3 year stretch of nothing and a 20-year excellent period rather than going back to the same transition group once every 4 years.

I can't draw prophetic conclusions for certainty and as such, i am not claiming it to be a certainty for disaster. However, precedent serves for a lot in sports and by precedent, the probability of India winning against good attacks with zero top order batsmen of 25 tests or more experience, is next to nil. Precedent in test cricket, largely proves that. No team has consistently won with zero top order players with 25+ test experience in the last 30 odd years and India, a team that is chronically deficient in basic competence in bowling, certainly will not be the first 'oddity' to break the goose egg.

Therefore, i back fatso to bat in the middle, get his eye in when the ball is 60-70 overs old and murder the second new ball, if batsmen around him last long enough for him to do so. Zaheer is not done, he is injury prone, but until you find a better old ball bowler than Zaheer amongst pacers, he is not done, i dont care how old he is. So far, there is Zaheer Khan, then there is daylight and then a bunch of bakwaas bowlers with the old ball. Bhuvi, Ishant, Umesh- none of them are 'test class' with the old ball yet. As for Tendy, if he doesnt announce retirement before next test, he is going to South Africa and i still have more confidence in Tendulkar's ability to handle the Saffie pacers than Pujara's.

Will the precedent be at work in such a case?[/quote'] Given that South Africa didnt play test cricket for 20 odd years, that prior to it, Asian batsmen & bowlers did not last beyond the age of 35 and in the last 20 years, only one asian has made it to 40 years old and active, i think you have too little data to draw precident on that one.

He came out in 2nd innings and smashed 2 sixes off 2 balls from Lyon. It shows he is feeling confident and in good nick. In 2nd test, he was unlucky to get a little edge down leg side and didnt bat in 2nd innings. In 3rd test again, he got a good start and looked good but he got out for a soft dismissal from the bowling of Steve Smith and in 2nd innings, he got run out. He has looked very assured against fast bowlers with his footwork, defense and shot making in this series. Its just a matter of time before he scores a ton again.

Are you sure it was completely his decision here and not the team/captains? Dhoni was already looking to defend and deny Clarke a chance of victory than more focused on winning (according to his statement). If that was the case, he might very well have wanted Sachin to play at his original place
