He has shown promise but it's better to wait and watch for about 3 years and see how he does. Remember Valthaty scored a ton in IPL and he is even struggling to get in his Ranji team.Even flopped badly in Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 trophy. Lets not hype Sanju nor write him off. If he is good enough he will make to higher levels gradually.

Valthaty and Samson are two different cases. Valthaty played for India u19 in 2002 and could never make for Mumbai ranji team. His progress because the injury he suffered in his eye. By the time, he played IPL, he was 27 and then he played for HP in Ranji but flopped. Samson is 18 and is a WK/bat and has already played FC with decent success in current season.

Rahul commented that Sanju is 18 and it is better he keeps his feet on ground and we keep ours. If we go on selecting every player as backup to Dhoni on the premise of having scored one 63 and one 40 in IPL format, then well we will have Parthiv, Saha, Bisla and all other keepers of Ranji teams as contendors who have scored many 50's in IPL and had success in domestic competition over few years. Also, do we rate him as keeper on basis of runs he scored in two innings. Dinesh Yagnik looked a better wicket keeper than Sanju Samson though.He's not even the preferred keeper in the RR outfit when Dinesh Yagnik is playing. With Dinda in the international T20 team we will certainly need few keepers behind the stumps. :giggle:

Who said he should be backup to Dhoni? Everyone is saying he is a good future prospect and remember every future prospect does not become real deal. He will have to work hard, improve and perform consistently in FC to do that.

And IMO he is far away from wicket keepers spot. Let him play for about three more domestic seasons and then everyone would be in better position to judge whether he is good keeper or not. I would like to point that he is the second preferred keeper in Rajasthan Royals after Dinesh Yagnik. Even when he played for Kerala in this Rani season he was not the keeper. Does not matter if he was a keeper or not. He has batted as good as any of their batsman. He played purely as a batsman and is preferred ahead Yagnik as a batsman. Yagnik is an experienced cricketer. He played last match as WK and did very well in both aspects. At 18, he is going to be perfect but he can always improve if he lacks something. FYI, Dishant Yagnik is a better Wk than even Dhoni, might be best WK in India, but it does not mean he will play ahead of Dhoni in Indian team and Samson certainly is a better batsman than Yagnik. Even ABDV was Wk in his early days but rarely kept for SA until now and played as specialist batsman.
