Stauss and Vaughan played till they are about 35-36 in age . I dont think that anybody has played 13-14 years. But thats cause most english batsman barring cook and now root have made their debuts when they are in the 26-28 bracket. 140 tests from the 92 currently means cook means 48 tests or effectively 3-4 years more. He will have to go through a drastic slump in form for that to happen.

May not be 140 but 200+ Tests looks very unlikely as well. You haven't counted injuries and the pressure that comes from being the England captain across 2 formats.

Although I say I think he can do it, there was a time where I was seriously concerned Ponting would do it (he had a brilliant patch which coincided with Sachin having a dip in form around 05/06). I also used to think KP himself might have a chance...

No he won't, he was an average player a few years back and once out of his prime he will go back to that. Unless he maintains current standards for another 8-9 years (which won't happen) he won't get there.

While Cook is a wonderful player, it is rather easy to forget just how difficult it is for anyone to play 198 tests at a high standard. Tendulkar's career is basically equivalent to two 'good' careers clubbed together or, in other words, if you were to split Tendulkar's career into two you'd have stats that could pass off for two different and quality batting careers. Cook's on the right track, but he has a long, long way to go. On a slightly related note, people are saying the same about Virat Kohli in ODIs. I don't see either happening, personally. Of course I hope I am wrong about Kohli, because if he does manage to break Tendulkar's record he will have won lots of matches for India.

cook will struggle like hell when not in the flow/form,his peak will last short and then the downfall.. his footwork and technique vs genuine pacers aint good and left arm pacers have moslty got the better of him..this ashes will prove a lot of default in his technique

Okay ... How much does he need to surpass Tendulkar?? I'm predicting ... 2 doubles and 1 single century for him in both Ashes. He will get 3 centuries against India next year too. Now this gets him 9 100s and 1300 runs just like that in the next one year and 15 tests. And this is not even calculating the runs he will score after getting to 100s or 200s. Neither do I calculate the runs he will score in the innings when he won't score a century. I am sure that Cook will get more than 1700 runs in this 15 tests averaging above 70 considering the poor bowling line ups of both India and Australia. This keeps him in good strength to overtake Sachin. I hope Sachin plays for another two years or Cook gets an injury because I don't see a bad form from cook for too long.
