Swann-And I don't say this because Ajmal is a paki....Swann seems to be a bigger douche where as Ajmal seems like a decent guy off field,Having said that I will still go with Swann. Cleaner action and does not have custom made pitches for him,Does well on most surfecaes.

Ajmal/Swann debate was settled after UAE series.
No it was settled in the 2010 series. (Asif-Amir one). Swann was far better here than Ajmal was in Dubai. England 2010 Swann - 12.22 Ajmal - 29.41 Difference of 17 UAE 2012 Swann - 25.07 Ajmal - 14.70 Difference of 11 Also it was settled with their respective series in SA and Oz. Swann did far better in them compared to Ajmal. Swann/Ajmal averages Eng - 28.25/29.41 UAE - 25.07/23.73 Oz - 39.80/111.50 NZ - Not played/58.50 WI - 24.05/14.47 Ind - 28.96/ Not played SL - 22.18/ 30.00 So Swann has outperformed Ajmal in 3/5 where they have both played. Ajmal outperformed in only 2. Also Swann only has a bad record in Oz which is OK coz almost all offspinners have struggled there. But Ajmal has horrific records in Oz/NZ and to an extent even SL considering the turning nature of the tracks. Ajmal isn't good outside turning conditions or players good against spin (SL) as his mystery is useless there.

^great stats for swann,does not rely too much on the pitch,he gives an ominous flight,revs,gets good drift which makes him potent on most surfaces

Swann is in classical off spinner mold with cleaner action and without using Dosra puts most front-line batsmen in trouble. Ajmal's action is not clean but records indicates not much separates the two.

England has a strong batting side and always post a good total which makes it easier for Swann to bowl freely and aggressively with men around the bat. Ajmal usually bowl with sub par 200 odd totals and plays in UAE with long gaps which doesnt help his stats. Ability wise , Ajmal is far superior to Swann and enndorsed by Murali. Current Aus batsmen are all hacks against spin barring Clarke. Swann failed to control him in this test and yet to take his wicket in current series. Ajmal would love to play this Aussie team in UAE to show whos the spun boss once again.

Yes, judge the players based on a series. The averages have been posted above and Swann has easily beaten Ajmal at those, without 'chucking'.

Should have, would have, could have. Endorsements mean zilch. Ishant Sharma constantly gets endorsed by Wasim/Waqar. Doesn't really mean anything, does it? :giggle: Since you are comparing bowling against lineups, in similar conditions against similar lineups Swann has comfortably outbowled Ajmal. These are the cases: Swann bowled well in the Ashes against a lineup of Hussey, Clarke, Ponting etc in 2010-11. A year earlier Ajmal averaged 100 against them. Similar lineup, similar conditions. In SL on 2012 Swann bowled amazingly well against a lineup of Jaya,Sanga,Dilshan etc in SC conditions. A few months later Ajmal gave a far less impressive performance (though decent in it's own right) than Swann. Even the series in UAE a few months earlier in similar conditions which Pak had won 1-0, Ajmal wasn't as effective. Similar lineup, similar conditions. In SA in 2013, Ajmal was horrible in the first and third tests where there was no help for spinners. In the second match, in SC conditions he took a 10-for (Shafik-YK also helped themselves to centuries on a more familiar pitch). Swann was consistently good in the 2008 series and was MoS. None of those pitches assisted turn and were typical SA pitches. So against teams who play spin well (SL) and conditions not conductive for spin (SA,Oz,NZ) Ajmal is pretty poor compared to Swann. The one time both prerequisites have been satisfied (Team weak against spin, Helpful bowling conditions) Ajmal has outbowled Swann (This is WI in WI). So Ajmal in the end is the spin bowling equivalent of a FTB while Swann is a truly great bowler.

Ajmal is over-rated where as Swann is relatively under-rated because one is the leader of his attack and part of a mediocre team and the other is a part of a good bowling unit in a very strong team. As I said,Keeping all chucking debate apart they are the top 2 Test Spinners in the world today but Swann for me. as he has more variations than AJmal who keeps going to the doosra when he is out of plans

Even if their bowling may be comparable I would pick swann in my test team because of overall package. Much better bats man and fielder/catcher. Sent from my A90S using Tapatalk 4 Beta
