We have lot more younger players. he will be 30 soon and thats the same age M Hussey was. I think India needs to guard against youth for the sake of youth. Provided somebody can do a job for 5-6 years IMO they need to be given a shot. Not to mention he is a very handy pacer who has also improved his bowling the past 2 seasons. Excels in breaking partnerships and can easily bowl 10 overs in a days cricket to reduce the load on the front-line players. Should be given a chance IMO v the Windies. Now if he fails then axe him. No issues

Given a choice.. lot of unknown guys would do well against spinners from abroad. Just because Gambhir failed doesn't make this is a great bowling attack. Badrinath averages heavily in India A matches. Doesn't mean much. Besides guys like Rahane, Rohit will be given preference ahead of this guy. Next batch will have Zol, Chand, Juneja.. India's problem is fast bowling. Not batting.

MSD is not good in Tests either,very unreliable especially overseas.I would dump him in a flash if he was not the captain and we had a very reliable option on the horizon(i am hoping Sampson can turn out to be a good one in a few years).

In full time keepers in world cricket Prior and De Villiers (though i somehow doubt he will be a long term keeping option for SA) are the only ones who have a higher average than Dhoni with the bat in tests. (Sanga not a full time keeper anymore in tests). From what i remember only Engineer was better technically among keepers than Dhoni from what India have had. Samson has talent and is one for the future no doubt. The point is we should not write somebody of just cause of stance or lack of technique before they have been given a chance. Look at Viru. Is probably the best Indian opening batsman barring Gavaskar. That guy is just hand eye co-ordination. In comparison stance aside Nayar plays from quality textbook shots. Moves his feet a lot. Yes he will be a LBW candidate but the flipside is that he rarely nicks it behind to the keeper or the slips and is an extremely strong sweeper against the spinners. The entire west indies greats generation is full of people with unorthodox stances. Pros for Nayar are -- is a multiple ranji trophy winner with mumbai and has done well against the best in ranji scene --- bats at 5/6 for Mumbai and scores a lot of his runs in a crisis situation --- knows how to bat with the tail --- has a solid India A record --- has maintained a healthy average of 56 despite batting at 6 over the years. Does not get to cash in on the flat wickets like some of the mumbai top/middle order. --- is a handy seam up bowler who has a decent ranji average and can chip in with the ball. Has about 100 wickets --- is a good fielder and a mature head Con --- stance ---- age 30 Nayar was rightly given a chance in 2009 on the back of another awesome season for Mumbai when mumbai lifted the ranji. He did guide a young Sharma Rahane etc during that period. He faced a total of 7 balls and was not out in in 3 matches. Yet he was dropped. What kind of treatment is this? You pick somebody and then axe him without giving him a chance?

There is a reason most of our promising batsmen are from West and South Zone and most promising fast bowlers from North, east and Central where pitches can be more bowler friendly.

msb1991 Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 Even if you ignore Nayar's bowling, his batting has been very good for the last few years. Averaged 77 two years back, 70 one year ago and 86 this year. I'll be very interested to see if his bowling is more or less effective outside India.
