randomGuy Posted October 13, 2013 Posted October 13, 2013 Sounds like another day, same story - The mood of celebrations turned into one of mourning as nearly 60 devotees were feared killed and more than 100 persons injured in a stampede at a temple in Datia district, 70 km from Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh, on Sunday morning. “Between 50 and 60 people have died and over 100 injured. The toll is likely to rise,” said deputy inspector general (DIG) Chambal range, DK Arya. Ratangarh temple in Datia, Madhya Pradesh. (Photo courtesy: ratangarhmata.org) As many as 50,000 devotees had gathered at the Ratangarh temple in Datia district on the occasion of Mahanavmi on Sunday. According to eyewitnesses, the stampede apparently occurred after policemen resorted to lathicharge to control the swell of devotees on a bridge leading to the temple. Some of the devotees fell into the Sindh river as they ran towards the bridge on the river. However, the police has claimed that the lathicharge did not result in the stampede, as per TV reports. Police sources said the death toll could be much higher. The injured have been rushed to a hospital in nearby Seondha town. The GRMC Hospital in Gwalior has also been informed and a team of 12 doctors from there have been sent to the spot. After the incident, tension prevailed in the area as angry people started pelting stones at the police. There was a huge traffic jam on way to the temple and, as a result, relief work was hampered. Inspector-general of police (Chambal range) SM Afzal and the DIG immediately rushed to the spot and asked for more enforcement of police personnel which is expected to reach the area in another half an hour. Police sources said an inquiry has also been ordered into the incident. The state government has sought the Election Commission's nod (as model code of conduct is in force in the state for the coming assembly elections) to airlift the severely injured victims. hhunaeh Posted October 13, 2013 Posted October 13, 2013 64 killed, 100 injured after rumour sparks stampede at Madhya Pradesh temple Sources alleged that a group of people from Uttar Pradesh, which wanted to cut through the long queue at the bridge, spread the rumour that it was on the verge of collapse, resulting in panic which caused the stampede. Reports said at least 25,000 people were on the bridge when the stampede happened. Some devotees are also feared to have fallen into the river and are untraceable so far, police said.

Too many of them in India sadly, not implying they deserve to die for dumbness of course. To the bolded part - Probably the only reasoning is that religious places are considered relatively crime free, cheap and plus the weather is decent when people visit them. Its good vacationing for the people who go there. Otherwise its worthless and dumb of course.

It is nobody's vacation, i can tell you that much. You can get into a crowded city bus to get a similar feeling. It just lasts a lot longer and you will be exposed to the elements.

Many times,visiting other tourist attractions in that place, experiencing culture around that place, or simply unwinding is just as much the aim as visiting the temple itself. I know what you are talking about, but i rather visit the tourist attractions and skip the crowded temples. But i usually keep quiet and go to these crowded places to keep everyone happy.

Raghav_12 Posted October 13, 2013 Posted October 13, 2013 Very sad incident. This place is very near to my hometown, some 25 kms from my hometown. Temple is located in forest area and until few years back there wasn't even a road to the temple and people would reach this temple by walking and then crossing Sindh river on small boats or through a kachcha bridge. This temple was known to be frequented by dacoits on the area who'll put their big bell (ghanta) over there. A similar tragedy had happened there in 2006 when 55 people had died. After that kachcha bridge was replaced by the bridge on which this stampede happened today. Local people are holding police responsible for this stampede. Police was illegally allowing tractor with trailers, which obviously were full of people on that bridge after taking bribes from them. It led to commotion on the bridge. Later when police stopped few of tractors, people started fighting with police and ruckus was created on the bridge. To control crowd police resorted to lathicharge but that didn't help much and then they started rumour that bridge is about to collapse. Following the incident crowd beat police mercilessly and I have been told that one of the senior officer is hospitalized in serious condition. Most of the people died either by being run over or by jumping in the river which was swolled because upstream some dam had released water in river. Sadly majority of the deceased are either women, children or elderlies.

NareshK Posted October 14, 2013 Posted October 14, 2013 This is why I would rather worship technology and science instead of God. Technology helped save thousands of lives from cyclone. People died in a stampede on their visit to God. RIP to those who died.
