Even if Kohli manages this, his record might be short lived. Hashim Amla has scored 2881 in 56 innings. Fastest to 3000 is Viv who took 69 innings. This will be walk in the park for Hashim Amla. And If he continues his good form he will beat the 'fastest to 4000' record by a mile as well.

So be it and fair play to Almla if and when he gets there.

Viv had an advantage of playing plenty of 60 overs odis during that time whereas Kohli is doing it when the odis are 50 overs an innings.
Viv took 4651 balls to to get to 4000+ mark Kohli has played only 190 balls less and needs 137 runs to get to 4000 mark. I don't see 60 over being such a big advantage for Viv. Also given the fact that he played at a S/R of almost 90 in an era where 70-75 was norm. Anyhow I do feel Kohli is destined for greatness but too early to compare him to Viv.

I was not talking about the SR of the batsmen which you mentioned in your post, i.e. no. of balls taken by Richards. My take was the no. of balls that were available for Viv to bat. Let me elaborate a bit... 1. Batsman A comes to the crease in 10th over in a 60 overs an innings game. He knows he can bide his time and can potentially bat for 50 more overs and will likely pace his innings accordingly. 2. Batsman B gets to bat in the 10th over in a 50 overs a side innings and knows he can bat for max another 40 overs, and will pace the innings so that he can score max no. of runs in 40. See the difference? As the no. of overs available for batsmen are reduced the risk that batsman takes increases and thus his average should reduce. That's why you will see lower averages in T20s compared to odia and lower averages in odis compared to Tests. Everyone knows Viv is a great of the game and probably the best odi batsman along with Tendulkar, but my point was the fact that Kohli was able to score the runs when he had less no. of balls to face has to be acknowledged. It's not a shot at Viv but I am asking the same thing to be done what's done when we look at highest team totals in odis. The totals scored during 60 overs innings are asterisked and explained. Similarly Kohli's stats should be qualified accordingly.

power plays, better bats, smaller boundaries, rubbish bowlers mostly. viv in his own league.
Yes an Indian player can never be greater than any other batsman we all know why your fans bring Viv and Lara what kind of bowling attacks has Viv faced i wonder what would Viv scored if he was against Likes of Marshall Roberts Garner Holding and Croft.

how old was viv when he scored those 4000? you cant disregard the age of a batsmen, sachin became great cause he was better then anybody at his age, amla is already 29 , he is nowhere near the league of kohli in ODI, by the time kohli is going to be 29 amla would be thinking of retirement. some posters from across the border are trying to take solace in the fact that amla is a muslim and if they dont have anybody better then this indian then atleast a muslim is better then him. pathetic.

No way Amla scored like this even if he had chance some of the shots Kohli Played reminded of Sachin 1990s style.

How can you definitively say that? When Kohli has managed to do something which nobody could since 50 overs an innings odis became the norm' date=' he becomes extremely special player, and when you make statements like "[i']Kohli nowhere near him" it's not much of an argument. Somebody with 13 100s and averaging 52+ in odis is in an elite bracket at the very top tier and don't think any player, past or present, is heads & shoulders above Kohli to merit "nowhere near him" comment.
The reason I say it because I saw how Kohli played against fast bowlers and I also saw how Viv Richards played against much better fast bowlers than Kohli has faced so far in his career and there is no comparison. It is not knocking down Kohli, it is just to emphasize how great VIV was and how destructive he was even in those days with those weak bats.

Can you please enlighten about the bold part. Against whom have you seen and were.

something to mention equalling a record has turned into comparing the two batsman now if in the future this comes near scoring 50 odd ODI centuries, and anyone creates a thread for it, will we start fighting saying this guy is not better than Tendulkar??? In any sport when one says a record may e equalled, one does not imply the one whos breaking it a bigger/better guy than one who has held it so far or vice versa. It just to remark upon the feat of the player in present generation and just enjoy while this guy keeps on performing as there is a very high chance that the previous player who held the record might not have played at a time when you could watch the sport, or not sure u were even born that to watch him play live. You would be surely lucky if you have seen both the player holding the recording and one breaking it , both live.. thank yourself for it and keep enjoying the action rather than comparing the two and trying to find out whos better than whom

SR in 60s was norm back then .... Haynes, Greenidge, Gavaskar, Miandad, Amarnath to name a few

kapil dev has the career strike rate of 95, better then viv, he played at number 6-7 yet he has the average of many pakistani openers who have played in last ten years. he has tonked West indian pace attack unlike Viv. plus he played south africa. now tell me again how "out of this worldly" bowling was viv facing? the only decent pace attack viv face was pakistan where he averaged 30, infact he played 41 matches yet he never scored a century against them. a guy who has never scored century against pakistan can be great for a Pakistani , but never for an Indian. when it comes to batting we have higher standards.

To be frank it really doesn't matter. Being right next to Viv is huge!
Excellent point. The fact that Viv has featured in this discussion already provides a barometer of how good Kohli is! It would have been sad if over-rated Saeed Anwars and Gayles had featured, but detractors have to bring in Viv, Lara and Sachin to downplay Kohli's achievement. So this is the best compliment a young 23 year old batsman can get.

viv richards? please. great player, but the guy never even played against the best bowlers because all of them were on his own team. beating up on derek pringles and other potato chip bowlers doesnt make you 'THE' greatest batsman of all time. kohli is a good player having a sick run of form, but i wouldn't call him a great player until he does something in test cricket. we've all been there before... (dhoni, bevan, yuvraj, etc.). and he is beating up on these sri lankan guys too often for my liking. they seem to give up on getting him out the moment he goes past 30, gets too easy for him
