Should he be in consideration for a return to ODI cricket for the WC? We need three reliable quicks in Aus/NZ, and will probably include 5 or so fast bowlers in the squad. I think, as of today, I would pick Shami, Bhuvi, Yadav, Zaheer, and (unfortunately) Ishant in the squad of 15. Even if he doesn't play in the XI i think that he provides valuable insights that really lift the whole bowling unit.

For 2015 WC Shami,BK,Aaron,Umesh & Ishant.No way Zak will continue till 2015 he'll be 37 at that time.

Dhoni has always said that he likes to give players that are going into tournaments like the WC plenty of experience, ie 80-100 ODIs. I don't think that this is going to be possible with someone like Aaron. I would take an experienced hand like Zaheer over a raw and undercooked Varun Aaron any day of the week. Even if he is 37, it shouldn't stop him from bowling at his current pace and level if he keeps up his fitness.

Aaron, Shami, Ishant, Umesh, BK and all othre bowlers in India have to earn the spot. World cup is still far but not really that far. SO all players will get enough chance to show what they got. Zaheer also at the same time needs to show his fitness, but as people have already started steretyping him, I hope he is still in the mix. It will make our bowlers more hungry to do well. The competition is on. Same thing goes for spinners. No one has cemented his place for a world cup team which is to be announced 13 months from now.

fineleg Posted December 21, 2013 Posted December 21, 2013 Unsure. Keep him as Test bowler for now. Think about it during the Aus ODI series - maybe depending on his fitness during Aus ODI timeframe. Not sure, this decision can go either way.

A load of 14-15 tests overs the next 12-13 months is itself going to be huge IF he can last till the Aus tour. Let him focus purely on tests for the rest of his career.

Hope he can lead India well in SA and that will be a feather in his cap, if he wants to sign off.
cricketman Posted December 22, 2013 Author Posted December 22, 2013 I'm going to disagree with you guys. Zaheer has looked SHARP. He did not spend all that time in France training and then grinding it out in Ranji trophy hell for nothing. No way did he do all that for just one series or even just one season. If he wanted to retire, he should have just spent his time living it up like Harbhajan and co, holidaying it up around the world. Zaheer is back and is back for a while, and if he can keep up his form and manages his load, I think that he can last till 2015. Forget the WC, we have series' in NZ, England, and Australia to win.
