Austin 3:!6 Posted December 22, 2013 Posted December 22, 2013 I think he did ok but could have utilized his bowlers better.
JourneyMan Posted December 22, 2013 Posted December 22, 2013 I give him credit for not going into defensive mode from the very start, and for persisting with an attacking philosophy even when it looked like SA would make it through. I question some of his decisions (why on earth was Kohli bowling? Why did he persist with Zaheer towards the end when Shami looked more dangerous?), but he showed more guts than what we give him credit for. Overall this test was a good learning experience and we got away with a draw so we can't really complain. The lessons learnt are that we lack an attacking spinner, our pacers have talent but lack the consistency (Ishant), fitness (Zaheer) and experience (Shami) to be a top bowling unit (I think Shami is on the right track though).
Cricketics Posted December 22, 2013 Posted December 22, 2013 He did fine. None of the bowlers were able to get Faf-De Villers out easily. He tried all options. He even gave Shami last crack at old ball which was reversing, right at the time of lunch. He gets lot of slack from people for no reason. It's not easy to lead such young side. He has shown good confidence in all and at the same time take care of seniors like Zaheer. Man deserves some credit instead of getting bulldozed with negative thoughts.
vvvslaxman Posted December 22, 2013 Posted December 22, 2013 Bowling shuffling was largely due to their energy levels. SO i will cut him some slack. For heavensake they are not robots. Bowling any bowler to ground won solve any issues.
SLICKR392 Posted December 22, 2013 Posted December 22, 2013 The Ashwin-Zak spell after Tea was understandable but he overdid it. Ashwin was defending from one end and Zaheer attacking. Had a wicket fell at that moment, Shami would have replaced Ashwin but he took this spell for way too long.
Cricketics Posted December 22, 2013 Posted December 22, 2013 Also, everyone becomes a captain. All viewers watching were like "Dhoni delaying declaration" etc. He knows what our bowling is and is capable of. I am glad he didn't declare before 400. We aren't playing Zimbabwe. This was south africa, and he judged it right. In the end, even 450 was coming out to be a little less to defend against Proteas. This guy is the captain of India for this long for a reason. Hence he is there, controlling a national cricket team, and we are here commenting through our PC and other devices.
Marut Posted December 22, 2013 Posted December 22, 2013 Poor. He should have brought Shami into bowl earlier and not after India's chances of winning had gone. Shami did not bowl for 36 overs between 87-123 and this shifted the match completely towards South Africa.
Gunner Posted December 22, 2013 Posted December 22, 2013 Credit to him for choosing to bat first, should have brought on Shami earlier after Tea
amiret Posted December 22, 2013 Posted December 22, 2013 Finest Captain ever. Not bowling Shami till SA had just 56 runs to get ? inspirational . just wish Kohli & Dhoni had bowled more overs.
Number Posted December 22, 2013 Posted December 22, 2013 He is not a test captain, so he is doing a decent job.
mancalledsting Posted December 22, 2013 Posted December 22, 2013 positive: backed and trusted his team- opted to bat on day 1 rotated his seamers excellently in RSA 1st innings under trying circumstances (131/1) negative: did not set a third man for the outside edge- giving loads of freebie runs to RSA batsmen 4th innings- allowing a release of pressure persisting with zak in back end of 4th innings despite him not being able to contain the batsmen not bringing Shami back earlier not sending himself up the order in india's third innings otherwise- can't criticise him much- overall managed to knock off 7 of their wickets and we still didn't lose- a fair stab at winning i think- its not as if the team had 10 warm up games to prepare
Sid Posted December 22, 2013 Posted December 22, 2013 He is not a test captain' date=' so he is doing a decent job.[/quote'] lol :cantstop:
Sid Posted December 22, 2013 Posted December 22, 2013 Did a pretty good job, attacked all the way but we were 1 wicket taking bowler short.
BeautifulGame Posted December 22, 2013 Posted December 22, 2013 He shouldn't have selected Vijay and Ishant as they are rubbish He should have bowled first Should have declared with less than 400 Should have bowled In experienced Shami to ground without any rest

Hindsight is always 20/20.

Laaloo Posted December 22, 2013 Posted December 22, 2013 It was ok. Not good not bad. Somewhere in between.
SLICKR392 Posted December 22, 2013 Posted December 22, 2013 Good, if you go by Dhoni's overseas standards.
