velu Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 Sriharikota: The Indian Space Research Organisation or ISRO achieved another milestone today as it successfully launched the Geo-synchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle or GSLV-D5 from the space port at Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh. The advanced GSAT-14 communications satellite that GSLV-D5 is carrying has also been separated from the rocket. If launched into orbit successfully, the Rs. 350-crore mission will mark India's entry into the multi-billion dollar commercial launcher market on a fully indigenous large rocket. An India-made cryogenic engine powers the GSLV-D5, which stands almost 50 meters tall (as high as a 17-storey building) and weighs a whopping 415 tons (as much 80 full grown elephants). "I am happy to say that Team ISRO has done it," ISRO chief Dr K Radhakrishnan said after what was called a make-or-break launch owing to two failures earlier. The GSLV program had suffered twin back-to-back failures three years ago and its last launch in August was aborted minutes before lift-off. On August 19, 2013, a major mishap was averted and the launch of the GSLV was aborted 74 minutes before lift-off after ISRO scientists found that about 750 kilograms of highly inflammable and explosive fuel had leaked out in the second stage. indian made cryogenic engine :two_thumbs_up: ISRO is making us proud :icflove:

hhunaeh Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 Great achievement. :two_thumbs_up: I read some article a few months back which claimed that cryogenic technology was denied to India to make sure local american companies got enough time to develop and start offering satellite launch services to companies. It said that they and other countries like france and russia have captured the heavy satellite launch market, so it will be interesting to see where gslv goes from here.
gattaca Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 For many who didnt know US blocked the tech transfer from Russia in 90's and impicated the top scientists of ISRO in the project. Clintons were no friends of india as well. It studied the atmosphere and forecast weather to help Indian farmers. "The rocket was provided by National Aeronautics and Space Administration to conduct space research. We successfully launched it and there has been no looking back since then," Chitnis said. The rocket was launched from Thumba, a sea-side suburb situated near Thiruvananthapuram international airport. "Locating this site took us at least five months. After I returned from MIT, hunting for a rocket launching site was the first assignment given to me by Sarabhai. I was in Kerala and the team decided that India should work on the equator as no other country was working along this location as far as space research was concerned. So we decided to set up a space station in the south." Chitnis selected Thumba as it was very close to the magnetic equator of the earth, making it an ideal location for scientists to conduct low-altitude, upper atmosphere and ionosphere studies. Chitnis suggested this location to his colleagues and after several meetings, the location was finalised for a rocket station. Nike Apache was launched from Thumba. Later, several rockets studying atmosphere were launched from there for countries like US, Russia, Japan, France and Germany. "Looking at a rocket taking off from Indian soil was a dream come true for the scientists standing on the beach. We knew that it was just the beginning and there was a long way to go," said Chitnis. Another interesting article on why thumba in Thiruvananthapuram, kerala was chosen as India's first Rocket Launching Station When Thumba took off Sriharikota, India's other Rocket Launching Station is in Andhra Pradesh, 80 km (50 mi) north of Chennai. I am sure there are good reasons for choosing Sriharikota just like thumba in kerala. Since most of our important isro centers are in south india, its obvious why isro is dominated by south indians

Precambrian Posted January 6, 2014 Posted January 6, 2014 And Cryo engines help in dispatching much bigger payloads I believe. This would make ISRO a favorite for smaller countries trying to launch their own satellites cheaply. Fantastic achievement indeed.
hhunaeh Posted January 6, 2014 Posted January 6, 2014 The GSLV is a three-stage vehicle with solid, liquid and cryogenic stages respectively. The GSLV MK-1 had a Russian-made cryogenic third stage, this has been replaced with an Indian-built cryogenic stage for the GSLV MK-2. The GSLV MK-3 will have an Indian built cryogenic stage with higher capacity than GSLV MK-2 GSLV uses major components that are already proven in the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) launchers in the form of the S125/S139 solid booster and the liquid-fueled Vikas engine. The third stage was procured from Russian company Glavcosmos based on an agreement signed in 1991. Russia backed out of the deal after US sanctions were imposed in May 1992. ISRO started the Cryogenic Upper Stage Project in April 1994 and began developing its own cryogenic stage. Russia agreed to sell 7 cryogenic stages and 1 ground mock-up stage instead of 5 cryogenic stages and the technology to build the stages. ISRO announced that the first and second stages of the launch vehicle are similar to the ones flown during the 2010 GSLV missions. The first, in April, was the first flight of the GSLV Mk.II, with an Indian-developed third stage engine replacing the Russian engine used on earlier flights. The third stage failed to ignite. The next launch, in December, used the Russian engine, however the vehicle went out of control during first stage flight and was destroyed by range safety. Its a multi billion dollar industry. ISRO wanted to do this 20 years ago but they didnt have indigenous cryogenic engine and wanted to get it from Russia but USA stopped them from doing it as they wanted the edge in commercial launch business.
surajmal Posted January 6, 2014 Posted January 6, 2014 MkII is a stepping stone to MkIII which is to be a backbone of the Human launch program. Heavier satellites and probes (rovers) for future mars/moon missions although is still the primary objective.
