CG Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 I like Clarke captaincy style, sure he has had his moments with katich, hussey, watson saga.but he is a aggressive captain who is looking to win and that's what u can ask for.
Lord Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 tactically hes good.good onfield captain but in terms of player management, hes as poor as they come
Pagalpanti Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 How is Clarke winning 5-0 in Aus after losing 0-3 few months back in Eng any different from India beating aus 4-0 after losing 0-4 in Aus? :WTF: Clarke is definitely a more pro-active captain no doubt but Australia still have to prove themselves away. Lets see how they handle SA.

Scarves Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 Don't rate Clarke very high. he is a smart guy but he has big time issues managing other guys. all the earlier mess was due to him. captaincy has two aspects - being a good leader/backing you players /inspiring them and taking good tactical decisions. Clarke really poor on the first part. Someone like Dhoni is great at that while he is not such great decision maker on field due to his defensiveness. lehmann has to be credited a lot for for taking care of the first part and creating and great atmosphere in the team. also he is tactically very sound. people say that ponting (another poor captain) benefited a lot from lehmann when he was his deputy on SL tour. Ponting poor captain? Winning record and managed to win in SA without Warne and McGrath and imagine having egos like Warne in your team and keeping them in check. Ponting is a great captain having to manage so many players.
Muloghonto Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 Ponting poor captain? Winning record and managed to win in SA without Warne and McGrath and imagine having egos like Warne in your team and keeping them in check. Ponting is a great captain having to manage so many players. Ponting was an above average to good man-manager (not great, he is neither the 'Godfather' figure that Ranatunga or Cronje pre fixing were, nor was he the 'senior statesman' like Steve Waugh was) but was a pretty attrocious tactician on field. Too often, Ponting seemed lost, reactive and lacking a plan 'B' on the field. A lot of his record has to do with his team- a monkey on autopilot would've won almost as much. Bowlers like McGrath or Warne or even Lee ( on his good days) didnt need much 'management'. You just had to point to them, sit back and wickets would come. His is a pretty inflated record for an ordinary tactician & above average man-manager, sort of mirroring the captaincy momentum that Viv Richards 'gained' from Clive Lloyd. A better man-manager/tactician like Mark Taylor would've managed to squeeze a few more wins for Australia than Ponting. Ponting, by no stretch of imagination, was a great captain. At best he was a decent/above average one.
adi B Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 well clarke might be overrated and he is surrounded by a lot of hoopla but some of his field settings in this series were just brilliant,he was very aggressive but he has to prove in the upcoming series in saf and then in october in uae

Vijy Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 Ponting was certainly not a great captain, though he played some wonderful captain's knocks.
Scarves Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 Ponting...not a man manager? Are you kidding me? This guy managed to make Symonds, Clarke, Watson, Warne all work as a team. People love to play with him even apparently in the IPL, he is just one of those guys that people love to play for, knows how to work a team and knows the game well. I mean for a team full of stars, too bad several of them never work out. People always downplay Ponting and Smith as average captains with great teams, well you got to work your team and knows how they click. That's a role that Dhoni brings as well in a way, he is a great man-manager. You don't win every practically every single trophy without doing something good. I hate how people down play Ponting, a captain isn't only supposed to tell people what to do, they are supposed to help their team on and off the pitch and lead by example.
Scarves Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 Ponting was an average captain at best. Winning does not make the captain great' date=' there is a reason by Stephen Fleming is rated high.[/quote'] Oh Fleming was amazing, he was smart and he knew how to make a piss average team into a functional solid outfit. What I was saying in regards to Ponting and the same can be said of Fleming, there is a lot to captaincy we don't see, there is more than just setting fields and telling who to bowl. Ponting was not a tactical captain like Mark Taylor but he was a great man-manager.
carnish Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 Best Cap ever --- Border, Fleming, Taylor, Cronje, Clive Lloyd, Ganguly, Arjuna, Imran
Pagalpanti Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 Australia were much more competitive in England than the scoreline suggests.would have won the third test if not for run.lost one other closely We were competitive in SA as well no? It could've easily been 1-0 win (should've won the 1st test and could've easily drawn the 2nd if not for a bad session). Point being Dhoni gets lot of flak for doing poorly away but MC (the captain) for all the praise he gets still has to do something of note away.

I hate how people down play Ponting, a captain isn't only supposed to tell people what to do, they are supposed to help their team on and off the pitch and lead by example. You keep using Warne's presence as a man-management win for Ponting. It wasn't. Warne was a much more established & senior player before Ponting got his captaincy. Warne did not require management outside of the 'what he told the media' (which is management team/boards job, not captains). Warne had long-since resolved his inter-player issues when Tugga beame the captain because after Taylor, Tugga and Warney were the only two captaincy candidates. Ie, Warney 'made his peace' with fellow Aussie players and ego clashes long before Ponting made his captaincy. As far as handling players go, I dont believe he handled Symonds correctly at all and most of his captancy years, the 'core' held together admirably enough for Ponting due to sheer momentum and experience from the Tugga years. You are correct however that people loved to play for Ponting because Ponting was a bit of a Tendulkar type of a captain: a bit aloof but always working hard at his game, 'leading by example on the field' and being so successful at it. He was nowhere close to being the man-manager that Steve Waugh, Ranatunga, Ganguly , Lloyd or Imran were. He was nowhere close to being the tactical genius that Brearley, Mark Taylor, Cronje, Ranatunga etc. were. On the topic of Smith, i rate him as a tactically ordinary captain who is also a good man-manager, he is lot closer to being the 'Dhoni' type of a captain, made to look better in terms of results because he's had Pollock, Steyn,Philander, Morkel at his disposal : ie, when in doubt, toss the ball to one of these and more often than not a breakthrough would come. Lastly, i do agree with the comments that Clarke's genius is limited to tactical competency. He is a poor man manager at best, who's type tends to benefit a team of younger players lacking 'superstar egos', as is the current Aussie team. He is lucky that he didnt have to manage big egos like those of Warney or Mark Waughl. Yes, Warney and Clarke are best buddies but if Clarke ever has the audacity to countermand Warney's field placement or mess with it consistently, Warney would've told him to feck off and find another bowler.
maniac Posted March 5, 2014 Author Posted March 5, 2014 Bump Told you guys. Learnt from his mistakes and whatta turnaround :hatsoff: Win at any cost and never back down attitude...makes test cricket exciting Still not a fan of him as a batsman and comes across as a douche but amazing captain

Learnt from his mistakes and whatta turnaround :hatsoff: Win at any cost and never back down attitude...makes test cricket exciting Still not a fan of him as a batsman and comes across as a douche but amazing captain India would benefit from a clarke like captain. Cricket Australia have the desire to be number 1 despite dominating cricket in the late 90s and 00s. No complacency. They get warne to help spinners! And we cant even get an indian bowling coach?!!

Got the famous trio instead, results speak for themselves...
velu Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 Have to appreciate dhoni for the phainta he gave to clarke & co
rajmarie Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 give me mitchell johnson in that kind of form and even ill look a great captain. This.....the only difference that has been made is MJ. He has terrorized the Eng team..& also forced SA batsman fear of getting hit. Take MJ out....& Aus will looks almost the same as they did in Ind & Eng before.
