That their access to the professions is deliberately blocked because of their faith. On the side of politics, the Communists and the Congress accept the data on poor Muslim representation, though they do not publicly articulate the reasons for this. They want to redress it through legislation and such things as reservation. An article in the current issue of Economic & Political Weekly, possibly India’s finest publication, looks at it another way. Written by the former chairperson of Aligarh Muslim University’s Economics department, it analyses the data of applicants to the civil services from select colleges. The author, Naseem A Zaidi, starts by framing the problem. In the announcement of 3 May, 2013, “out of the 998 candidates recommended (for selection) for various services, only 28 were Muslim – 2.8% of the total. This story is repeated year after year and crossing the 3% barrier seems insurmountable.” She then looks at the number of candidates from these institutions that actually appeared for the exams and finds a solution to the problem there. The average annual number of applicants for the four Muslim-dominated institutions is under 25. For the other set it is over 444. Zaidi adds her understanding of a second factor that inhibits Muslim participation, which is that “Muslim girls are performing well in many areas but they are not encouraged to attempt the CS examinations I have seen this in one of my neighbours back nome...Eventhough girls are far better tahn boys in studies they just refuse to send them to schools “there will be not many who will go out of their way to help you. And there will be even fewer who will deliberately want to hinder you. JourneyMan Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 Haven't actually lived in India so I don't know if there are career counselors who guide/advise young people about the opportunities and career paths that they can pursue. I've met some intelligent and hard-working Indians in India and abroad, from different religious and ethnic backgrounds, and sometimes I feel they weren't really informed about the kinds of careers that exist out there and just ended up randomly following a path.

Also, when people are brain washed that people in India and Hindus are against you, even the most disciplined of them will think that the system is rigged and people are out to get them.

The Outsider Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 A lot of Muslim girls and even boys are forced to ply the trade of their lineage by their parents and the sad thing is that carry on the legacy with their own children. From my class in XIIth there were 10-12 Muslims out of a class of 45. With one exception, everyone else is continuing in their family business. Of the remaining, barely 50% are doing so. It's not necessarily a bad thing in a city like Lucknow where a lot of prominent businesses are Muslim owned, but I can certainly sense the frustration at not being allowed to do what you want. PS: most of my post is based on my personal experience and is in no way capable of a generalized statement.

I am guessing the majority of 2-3% in the civil services are from among the rich muslim families

They have the same rights as any Indian, and access to the same schools and institutions right? We have had Muslim presidents, some of our most famous actors are Muslim, we have had famous Muslim sportsmen, artists, singers, businessmen. Where's the disadvantage?

There are a lot of people who wants to watch Pakistan cricket matches and cable operators especially tune in channels like Neo, Ten cricket, and Sony 6 for Pakistan cricket matches on demand and no guesses who demands that. I have been surprise that cable operator did not tune in Star sports 2 for Ranji trophy match b ut yeah Sony 6 was shown especially for for Pak-SL matches in Dubai. I was like :WTF: Similarly, Sony six was removed for NZ-WI matches. A lot of Pakistan lovers. :giggle:
