Which meant that only the ones who make it to the top saw good money and if they failed, there were very few backup options, obviously cricket was a luxury only the richer could afford until recently.

Why single out specific tours? In the current set up we have Jadhav (Marathi verison of Yadav) Rahane and Yadav who are not upper castes in maharashtra atleast. Umesh Yadav especially can be counted in the BC category. Vijay Zol is also not an upper caste.

Bhuvi is gujjar...I don't know if it is upper,middle ,lower caste.I don't think caste or religion is relevant.Unless harbhajan is captain where he will chose 5 singhs....:angry_smile:or dhoni who will chose the CSK caste....:devil_smile:

I myself am told that I am from an OBC background in maharashtra and it never bothered me what the caste of other people. So long as people are selected on merit i dont care what their background is. Clearly with somebody like Narendra Modi who is from a backward caste is leading a national party and appears to be the most popular leader as per the surbeys tells me that as the days pass caste is not going to play the role it once did. Which is a good thing.

Why is that? Marathi people make up 7% of India's population. Where are the players from other regions? Same thing can be said about many other teams Where are the black players in south africa cricket who make up 80% population? Where are the tamil players in sri lankan cricket? Mathews is the only tamil players i know and before him was murali Where are the sindhi players in Pakistan or even Balochi players? Why is the team punjabi dominated? why are cricketers in England coming from exclusive independent schools and not state school?

It is a known fact that majority of old cricketers came from Brahmin community , and there are various cultural, social and historical reasons. cricket was oriental game, and mainly upper caste and Muslims in India played with Britishers. In fact I read an article where lower caste people were employed as ball boys those days, they were not allowed to play and one of them went on to represent India ( cant remember his name). Even after independence, cricket culture was limited to urban centers although tennis ball cricket became popular in rural areas in last 30-40 years. Only in last 10-15 years , due to the ubiquity of TV, cricket has traveled to other parts of the country. No wonder you dont see a domination of a caste any more.
