Speeds and Performances of Pacers and Spinners

Recommended Posts

Watched all 4 overs of Kartik Tyagi in the game replay of UP vs Delhi.

He was bowling really well against good batters like Rana, Dhull, Badoni etc.

Pace ... He was bowling at his quickest. Looked 140 k to 150 k range to me. Some deliveries looked express. He was charging in and looked very aggressive.

Bounce .. Got some bounce off length balls and bowled atleast 3 nasty bouncers. His hard length balls looked good.

Accuracy  .. Most balls in the right areas. 16 dot balls.  ER of 3.5. Bowled a few excellent channel balls too.

Movement .. Got some indip and a couple of balls moved away too.

Yorkers .. Lots of good straight yorkers and a couple of good wide yorkers.

Slower balls .. Saw 4 good slower balls including 2 slower bouncers.

Really liked what I saw.  Not just fast bowling but good skilful fast bowling.

Saw a few balls by Mavi.

Looked accurate but nothing more than brisk medium pace. Bowling same pace as recent IPLs.

Not impressed.

Perfect case of how stats don't reveal the complete picture.
Kartik was phenomenol and rapid...bouncer to Nitish Rana was a highlight, it just went too quick for him.

Hangargekar  2 for 28 from 4 overs.

does he bowl few balls above 140K?

i believe he is 135 to 140K- Fast medium pacer category.

Should the categories be called like below, Please advise changes.

150+            Super quick & super fast

145 to 150K- Super Fast

140 to 145K- fast bowler.

135 to 140k- fast medium Pacer

130- 135 - medium pacer

125 to 130- perfect trundler

118 to 125- slow trundler

Hangargekar is young. He bowls 135 k to 140 k now and is Fast-medium.  But wants to bowl fast and should be able to bowl 140 k to 145 k within a couple of years.

Plus he is a hit the deck bouncy pacer. And that adds to the hostility factor.

mine is simple .70-79 medium pace,80-85 medium fast ,85-90 fast medium,90-95 fast ,95-100 express.

IMHO  Release speed is just one of the factors that determine the categorization of a pacer

1. Release Speed

2. Zip off the deck

3. Bounce off the deck

4. Special factors like releasing the ball well inside the crease

5. Bowling style like hit the deck or skiddy or floaty

All these factors combine to categorize a pacer.

A pacer who gets the ball to zip through with bounce can be fast af 140 k to 145 k. But one who can't needs to bowl 145 k to 150 k to feel fast to the batter.

Floaty bowlers look medium pace even at 135 k to 140 k.
