Dint play a warm up match. Also wasn't successful in the recent Australia A tour. I just think he needs to be tested first in home test matches till he gets some confidence. Commentators kept talking of his temperament and calmness in domestic matches but that was what was lacking in this match.

Ambati Rayudu is a decent batsman. He has done well in A tours and also did well in ODIs. Why not pick him over Rahul who looks raw. Perhaps Rahul doesnt have the confidence he belongs at test level yet. He should be given one more chance in Sydney but I think he needs more FC experience and A tours.

M Vijay was hopeless in his 1st few tests outside the subcontinent. It was only on his 2nd tour to SA last year that he showed considerable improvement in his defensive technique.

Not jerky means he was not allowing his body to go all over to play the ball. He was edgy not jerky. There is a difference. Second one needs lot of work.

too many unrealistic expectations from a 22 yr old :giggle:...he is not the one to blame but our strategically incompetent selectors and ex players who are challenged when issues are complex...this is yet another evidence of the incompetence that is failing to achieve greater heights for indian cricket. A new player should make his debut against moderate attacks preferably at home and should come to Australia or SA LAST...wi and zim should be the first tours... if you understand how a player develops, its basic commonsense.....what the hell was he supposed to achieve in australia? if our best players like dravid show such incompetence, then less said about the malhotras and hirwanis these ex player just need to look at their own record..dravid averaged around 13 in 1999 even though he had 3 yrs of international experience and lots of overseas tours...he still suffered now a 22 yr old is expected to succeed in a place where azhar,vengsarkar, manjrekar, ,greenidge have failed? not everyone is sachin or even kohli ideally there is no reason to select a under 25 yr old unless he is in the top 1% of talent,mental skills and cricketing intellect who stands apart from the crowd ....Apart from that only highly seasoned fc cricketers(25-30 yr olds with more than 7+ FC seasons and india A tours) have to be in contention if he has been selected because selectors see something exceptional in him , It is fine...otherwise they were bloody foolish

i wouldnt have felt bad if he got bowled, lbw or edged to the slips. but getting out to aggressive strokes without even getting into the double figures is a little stupid

if memory serves me right Rahane played some dumb shots on debut as well I just think its not fair to judge anybody on debut. Shikar scores 200 v aus or something in India. But his flaws outside the sub have been clear for all to see.

Has he played any A tours yet ? Just selecting a player based on Ranji stats is absolutely foolish as they can be very misleading because there are so many mediocre players and teams. Quality of competition is quite low. But its not right to write him off yet. He should be given one more chance as the next test is a dead rubber anyway.

yes and that despite being pretty experienced at international level. Also, this is Rahane's second Australia tour. He was there last time too, didnt play test but played warmups. Rahul did not even get to play a warmup here.

Pretty bad shot To those saying he shouldnt have come up,hes an opener and looked pretty bad vs spin in first innings.I'm sure given a choice a batsman would prefer to bat closer to his natural position Anyways he should get more chances and most likely would

He did I think toured in August in Aus with A team.
