Ankur Upadhyay Posted December 28, 2014 Posted December 28, 2014 That team was something else... Sachin, Dravid, Sehwag, Laxman, Ganguly, Zaheer, Kumble. They were able to take on the mighty Aussie team.. This Aussie team is nothing like their old counterparts.. This Indian team would not have stand a chance against the 2003 or 2008 Australian team...
Crookbond Posted December 28, 2014 Posted December 28, 2014 If you had seen those series, you would see the self belief each and every player had to go neck to neck with the Aussies. Not just a couple of guys like Kohli now. Out off nowhere players played blinders, tail wagged, etc. Both Ganguly and Kumble inspired the team. Someone or the other would always stand up to be counted The self belief is completely lacking now, particularly in the bowling. We had limited bowlers like RP and Agarkar shining Self Belief? How do I measure thaT? It is subjective. I have watched those series very closely. The point is that if that can be attributed to the captain alone. In England, our tail wagged - would that be attributed to Dhoni? For example, in Kumble's tenure the decision to abandon the tour after the SCG Test was not made by Kumble alone - Tendulkar was one of the main proponents of it. In 2012, Dhoni literally pleaded Tendulkar (despite injury) to stay back after the Test series to play the CB series. Sometimes, there's too much of naive explanation for the role of a captain in the team.

That was an ATG team, perhaps second only to WI of the 80s.

Raghav_12 Posted December 28, 2014 Posted December 28, 2014 He asked how many series we won and not how many series we might have won :poink: Its about the process, not about the result. 2003-04 series we had upper hand in a drawn series and 07-08 we won (what I believe) and 11-12 Dhoni became captain.

Even Pujara I feel will learn from this past year. He had a brilliant 2013, and 2014 he started to be found out a fair bit. Dhawan I think looked solid this series but has failed to convert. I don't think those 2 are far away. I feel both of them (more so Pujara) just need a big score to break the shackles. The problem is with the bowlers. We are not bowling as a unit. It seems like each bowler has their own independent game plan and on top of that it's completely different to the captains. We will never take 20 wickets if we don't start trying to bowl as a team. We need to build pressure from both ends and be relentless.
Raghav_12 Posted December 28, 2014 Posted December 28, 2014 i merely rephrased his question .. i know process is more important than result Thats why I am saying we might not have won series in 03-04 or 07-08, but the process in which we didn't win those series was much different from the process in which we didn't win series in 11-12 or 14-15. Look at the process and compare processes. not results.

I think bowlers will do well in helpful conditions. On flatter tracks they are clueless and it has always been like that.Even the overseas victories we had were mostly due to batting which allowed us to build scoreboard pressure.

That is where you need right guidance. Dhoni doesnt understand bowlers and bowling, captains like a novice. Who the hell in the right mind will ask Shami to go round and bowl bouncers. There is a reason Siddle and Harris dont do that, never try to follow MJ. Coz not everyone can bowl like that. On these pitches, even he has been ineffective with bouncers, Indian bowlers stand no chance then. Dhoni thinks everyone will become MJ just because he asked them to bowl like him. Miracles like Lords dont happen everday.
BeautifulGame Posted December 28, 2014 Posted December 28, 2014 We didn't win, but for 10 years, we had the best record of all touring teams in Australia. We drew series and number of match win-lost were like 2-3 with 3 draws. That is an excellent record by any standards. Australia was wiping floors with other teams, complete whitewash during the same period. And this was Australia at their peak, at home with livelier pitches http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/team/6.html?class=1;home_or_away=2;opposition=2;spanmax1=31+Dec+2010;spanmin1=01+Jan+2001;spanval1=span;template=results;type=team Thing is, we were on an upward swing in tests, from being utterly miserable, we started giving fights and every series was an improvement. Then in the last 4 years that progress has been completely lost and we are going backwards instead Because they gained experience from their previous tours. How many tests did they win in their first tours? Sachin even needed 13 years to win his first test in Australia Comparatively these players doing very well. With experience they can out perform the under achieving fab 5 era

Sachin even needed 13 years to win his first test in Australia Comparatively these players doing very well. With experience they can out perform the under achieving fab 5 era You are forgetting a very important point here i.e the Aussie team the Fab 5 had to face was an ATG team. That Aussie team had a feel of invincibility around them unlike the current team.
BeautifulGame Posted December 28, 2014 Posted December 28, 2014 Dravid*Laxman and Ganguly in their*first tours we lost to an awful england team 2-0 , Australia 3-0 ,Lost in NZL , humiliatingly all out for 80 in WI and bundled out for single digit scores in SA as well They only became competitive after gaining 5-6 years of experience .None of the greats apart from Sachin were neither consistent or competitive in their initial tours The current generation of Rahane Kohli etc are much better performing in comparison And they don't have a Sachin ,the world best batsman ,to help them out either .Or a world class bat like Azhar for that matter* Amazing how we glorify the past to cricket to current generation. Yes the likes of Pujara and Dhawan have been inconsistent but still better than the likes of Dravid or Ganguly in their first tour to Sa

Cricket_Hacker Posted December 28, 2014 Posted December 28, 2014 The bowling faced by the previous generation was a class apart. the English and Kiwi attacks in that era weren't exactly great
BeautifulGame Posted December 28, 2014 Posted December 28, 2014 The bowling faced by the previous generation was a class apart. They also had lot of practise matches to prepare unlike these youngsters An attack consisting of Johnson Harris and Hazelwood is not inferior to Macgrath Fleming and debutant Lee in home conditions .Warne is always non factor against India. And Johnson had the fear factor that no one possessed since 80s WI This England bowling attack of Anderson Broad is much superior than the 90s attack Same with NZL with South and Boult definitely their best bowling attack since 80s The SA attack of Steyn Morkel Kallis Pillander is as good if not better than Donald and Pollack Yes the WI Srl and Pak had better attacks but these players haven't played them yet RO cash in .
BeautifulGame Posted December 28, 2014 Posted December 28, 2014 We are missing both Bhuvi the batsman as well as bowler
Gollum Posted December 28, 2014 Posted December 28, 2014 You had Viru Sachin VVS Rahul Gauti now you have pretenders who are only good for IPL Stop taking that hack Gambhir's name with these legends.
Switchblade Posted December 28, 2014 Posted December 28, 2014 Stop taking that hack Gambhir's name with these legends. Well he did well in the Newzealand and South Africa tours only after 2011 he lost his place and rightly so.
