Have always been a big critic of Dhoni but feel sad that he will never play again in tests. Was a good test batsman at no 7( how many WK batsmen are as good as this guy?) but a sh!t captain. Probably should have let go off captaincy after Eng series in 2012 but unfortunately for Indian cricket Srini-CSK-India Cements nexus was too powerful at that time. Genuinely liked him till about 2010 but I feel Srinivasan influence spoiled him as a person. Wish there had never been a thing called IPL. Thank you MSD for your contribution, hope you can lead us to the WC.

Perhaps he could have been a better player if he wasn't the captain of test side for this long, but we also have to remeber that he had to actually do this favor for the team to keep captaining as no one else wanted to and some players had gotten dropped and some were too young to be considered. A lot of respect for a man who played all three formats as a captain, finisher and wicketkeeper for nation with volatile followers. Apart from the sheer physical toll, the mental and emotional drain would have been enormous. I mean, his hair greyed visibly over the last few years. Would have been happier to see him declare his retirement rather than some BCCI press release. respect and thanks for the ride.

India might as well fail under Kohli too, no one is suggesting that Kohli is a messiah to rescue Indian cricket. However, Dhoni lost the right to captain the test side a long time ago. When something does not work you will have to look for alternatives. If you keep continuing with a proven failure due to the fear that the alternatives would also fail, you will never succeed.

What is Kohli going to do that is going to be different from Dhoni, will Ishant magically start bowling perfect lengths? Will Shami start swinging the ball? It's not like Dhoni acts and makes decision totally against the beliefs and opinions of others in the team, all he can do is make the best of the resources he has and hope the team can give it their all. This is just going from one scapegoat to another. Nothing is achieved except temporary relief to the critics.

Not every debutant will start brightly. Lot of successful players have had as poor first game as this. He was thrown straight away in overseas test without even getting a practice game.

In Tests you need 20 wickets to win, in limited over cricket you don't.

Leaving his personal cricketing aside, in terms of captaincy I think he didn't do much wrong. The armchair critics over complicate things bring in so many variables when the bowlers can't even do the basics right. End of the day, every test match is won by having competent fast bowlers. End of story. Look at those Pakistan teams few years back when they had Aamer, Asif, Gul etc. That team would collapse for less then 200 each innings. But they were always in the game because of their lethal bowling.
