fineleg Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 Just seems like in general Indian batsmen have better IQ than Indian bowlers. (ignore no brain Nohit Sharma please). While there are exceptions (thinking cricketers like Kapil Dev (who could bat well too), Anil Kumble...), in general this seems to be broadly true. Why is that? Why is the thinking capacity and mental acumen of Indian batsmen sharper than Indian bowlers thro' history? Do young upcoming cricketers with more mental acumen choose batting, and remaining choose bowling!??
MK55 Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 This claim that Batsmen have more IQ than Bowlers is preposterous. Have we conducted an IQ test? Pitches all over the world are getting flatter. The game is heavily skewed in the favor of the batsmen. Also cricket isn't chess which requires more of thinking. As a bowler, a lot also depends upon your rhythm. You might know what delivery you have to bowl but may be unable to execute it. Also batsmen have much more freedom when it come to shot selection as they are able to manipulate the field and might make them seem intelligent speciously. As a bowler you don't have that much scope. You can bowl a slow delivery, alter the length etc, but the bats and pitches are so good these days that the batsmen can still connect and score of those balls. So very difficult to deceive the batsmen unlike vice versa.
fineleg Posted January 11, 2015 Author Posted January 11, 2015 ^ No IQ test conducted buddy. Nothing scientific. Just an observation, throwing it out there in ICF for discussion. Nothing meant to be preposterous.
MK55 Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 Also when it comes to India, we never had bowling superstars. So youngsters have got no one to emulate. A lot also depends upon the conditions in domestic cricket.Earlier we had unresponsive pitches with no encouragement to fast bowlers. Now we have green tracks. So possibly we might produce the best trundlers in the world:haha:
jf1gp_1 Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 the easiest process in the world is to listen to "Papa-Mummy" be a good child, finish school then goto college, find a job, and then continue working till you retire. I call it the easiest because since independence this has been the template for 50 cr Indians. You know whats abosoluty rare feat for a person; its to represent India as a bowler and win test match. Its rare cause only 120-130 have done it since 1932 thats 1 per 40-50 lakh who's life are similar to yours and mine. Its alright to be critical but lets not go insulting the 'thinking and mental' capacity of these gifted set of individuals.
kosingh Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 I don't think it's an IQ issue. As long as the batters are bit playing wild shots, they don't look stupid. When a batsman plays forward to a delivery he should have played back to, or he meekly defends a poor delivery that should have been dispatched, we rarely attribute it to IQ. More than IQ, I think our bowlers lack discipline and ability. Sure there are Einsteins bowlers like Ishant. But there are equally genius bowlers like rohit.
panesarv Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 If they had higher IQ, they would've become batsmen
Pagalpanti Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 Ashwin definitely seems like a bowler in Kumble mould. He knows his limitations and is starting to do whats required of him. Rather than trying those Carrom balls in search of wicket every ball. Shami is turning to be our strike bowler. A fit Bhuvy would complement him well to create pressure from other end. Its Yadav and Aaron that need to improve.
MK55 Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 If they had higher IQ' date=' they would've become batsmen[/quote'] I guess its the opposite especially for India. The batting line-up is well established. There's no paucity of talent and hence competition in that department. But if youre a youngster who can clock 145k with decent accuracy, you have a great chance of breaking into the international team. The same cannot be said about the other countries though. Also a lot has to do with passion. Some people are passionate about bowling.
Lannister Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 They lack discipline. They are too reliable on our batsmen that they bail them out every time, no matter how many runs our bowlers leak. That is one of the reason I think our batting line up is one of the world's best. Every time it's all comes down to how we bat not how we bowl, that bowlers are there only for the sake of completing their allotted overs. This mentality needs to be changed and they should start taking some responsibility.

Vilander Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 Ashwin is good for his role. Shami will improve if he becomes fit, hopefully Bhuv will come good he has all the ingredients. Yadav/Ishant/Aaron - frustrating...atleast one of them need to growup..then we need to find one or two other youngsters.

Shami just got lucky with gifted wickets.
adi B Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 They are earning in millions thanks to ipl, whats the use of of iq(if they have or even if they don't)

coffee_rules Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Indians don't respect good bowling even if it's staring in their eyes! Their attitude towards bowling is summed up in how some define cricket is about - " Batting karnewale aur Batting karwanewaale "
Khalpat Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 A bowler has to take care of many things: You can not ball bouncer, you cannot ball leg side, you have to take care of wide, you have to take care of no balls, you can never ever ball a beamer, you have to ball as per your fielders. As a batsman you do not have so many restrictions, he can hit a no ball, he can loft, he can hit to any side of ground, he knows what would be the pace of next bowl a bowler is going to ball whereas a bowler has no idea that when a Dravid will come out charging or when a Sehwag will do a defence. A bowler is off spinner or Pace bowler or swing bowler , make the batsman also a right hand leg shot batsman or left handed forward defence player and then judge the IQ of both.
kruiser Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Bowling is the only "action" in cricket, Everything else is a reaction to that. You cannot bat or field unless a ball is bowled. Also, the cricketers that represent us out there are the the most courageous and intelligent folks in the country. They know their craft better than any other, which is how they rose to teh top. They have direct stakes in being a match-winner as opposed to us voyeurs who want a victory. They do not kick in the butt but a mentor/coach to point out their mistakes.

But they're neither the most intelligent folks in the country, nor the most courageous.
