Asoka also comes to mind. any on specifically the marathas? just suggest any good which come to mind and your review of it if possible

Precambrian Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 Mohenjo Daro promises to be a great movie. If the director concentrates on the unique egalitarian society of those times (4000 yrs back) where there were no kings, everyone were equal and in all likelihood democracy existed.

Arun Shourie and Koenraad Elst are two authors I would recommend. ah man its for this stupid art class im taking this semsester and we were supposed to make topics start of the semester and i chose 'historical india through the lens of contemporary bollywood.' so just wanted to watch a bunch of relevant movies and then see how i go abt it. prolly will focus more on the culture potrayed than the actual events shown which as you mention are unlikely to be accurate anyways. but first i need to narrow down on some film choices :D i thought it might be a good general topic too

(Shivaji conquered his first fort when he was just a teenager). Bal Shivaji was produced by CFSI (Children's Film Society of India) and was subsequently dubbed in many other Indian languages. Guru Dutt's 'Baaz' is based on the Portuguese invasion of India. I don't think anyone else has made a film on the Portuguese invasion of India (in Hindi). Then you have plenty of films on the Mughal dynasty - Mughal-e-Aazm, Anarkali, Taj Mahal etc You also have 'Razia Sultan', based on the only female sultan of Delhi. All of them are historical fiction; it's impossible to make a film on just history, because we know very little of our history.

Clarke Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 If you're fine with TV series, there's Benegal's Bharat Ek Khoj. It is based on Nehru's major book which means it will have divided opinions. There's also The Story of India by Michael Wood.
