Sachin=GOD Posted May 16, 2015 Posted May 16, 2015 Not in too distant past, it was impossible to imagine an India XI without Virender Sehwag, Zaheer Khan, Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj Singh. All four had made a significant contribution to the triumphant 2011 World Cup campaign, and three of them helped India reach the pinnacle in Test rankings. But time waits for none. It is no secret that the four stalwarts are way past their prime now. Poor fitness and form have ensured that, forget about staking the claim for a Team India spot, they don't set the field ablaze even in domestic cricket or the Indian Premier League. The national selectors stopped considering them a long while ago but, in the light of their service to Indian cricket, it would be a travesty to let them walk into the sunset just like that. It seems that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is thinking on these lines. It is toying with the idea of sending Sehwag, Zaheer, Harbhajan and Yuvraj for a farewell series in Bangladesh next month. If a section of BCCI has its way, it will provide the players an opportunity to call time on their illustrious careers wearing the India shirt. Selectors' call A senior BCCI official told MAIL TODAY that while it is too early to confirm whether the quartet will go to Bangladesh, talks have been going on to give them a sendoff that their services to Indian cricket deserve. "What they have done for Team India in the past decade will be hard to match. But as is the case with every sport, time does catch up with you. So we are thinking about giving them an opportunity to go to Bangladesh and sign off on a high.... Some people may term it an emotional decision, but so what? But yes, the idea needs the approval of national selectors," he said. The squad is to be selected on May 20 in Mumbai. The tour starts with the Test in Fatullah on June 10 and ends with a day-night ODI in Mirpur on June 24. Interestingly, Bangladesh tours generally feature the future stars of Indian cricket or the benchwarmers as the seniors generally choose to skip the series. But it could turn out to be an interesting tour - featuring a Test and three ODIs - if the fading stars are indeed picked. Asked if the stalwarts will be selected for the entire series, the BCCI official said: "That would depend on the selectors. Yuvi had his swansong in the T20 WC, was picked and played every match, so many times since his recovery from cancer but failed almost every single time. Harbhajan was played in the Aus home series in 2013 in spite of doing nothing to warrant his selection in the domestics. Zak too got his fair chances, got his test career extended so that he could pick 300 wickets. Only guy who wasn''t given too many chances was Sehwag. Still very bad decision if it comes to fruit. We need to be ruthless, not soft and emotional. These people have got enough chances and many attempts at redemption, case over, not get lost and play IPL. What if they find form in Bangladesh? Will BCCI then drop Vijay,Rahane,Shami,Ashwin to accommodate these seniors this winter?

I thought all that had changed post 2000 but no we are at the same place where we were in the dreaded 90s. Right now our selectors, players should be thinking how to crush the Banglalis, how to humiliate them after what they did in the aftermath of the QF. That is what West indies of old or Australia of 2000s would have done.

Will create unnecessary pressure for youngsters Also what's the point of giving the legends a send in an away series ? If we want to really give a send off to these legends first ask them to announce retirement .Then play an exhibition match btw India team and legends of 2011 WC in Mumbai or Kolkata to give them a proper send off . This seems a half baked stupid PR stunt

Don't have to play them all in every game. Viru might be way past it. The others can still contribute. Experience matters. I mean, a supreme hack like Afretard would habitually pummel Bangbros. If anything, win the first two games and then make the 3rd a benefit game. Sometimes, you need to indulge in professional trolling. They should not feature in Tests.

Look what happened to Pakistan. Went with an inexperienced team and got thrashed. For that matter, why did Sachin have his own retirement series?

Bhai, Bangladesh post 2015 WC are a different side, they are playing with more conviction and have tasted quite a lot of success, they will wipe the floor with our 2nd string teams in limited overs cricket. But that isn't the main concern for me, you don't know/underestimate our senior culture. If these 4 play well they will start yapping in interviews about comeback, media will play the nostalgia card,public sympathy will be with them. Do you think our youngsters need this distraction? We have a solid base to become a top test/ODI team for many years. Don't want Yuvraj,Sehwag forcing their way into the XI this winter or Zak/Bhajji replacing Shami/Ashwin. These 4 are done. Want a send off, then host an exhibition match in India as some poster said.
Sooda Posted May 16, 2015 Posted May 16, 2015 I think this is a ridiculous idea too - resting the main team is the right call, but to replace them by looking at the past instead of to the future is silly. These guys dont need a 'send off' they are India legends and will go down in history. To waste this opportunity to blood youngsters is just not right. And it will never end too - Gambhir will ask why he wasnt allowed in, especially if Yuvraj is making the tesst side. And yes what about Nehra, Munaf Patel, Venkatpathy Raju
