Oral talaq delivered through new media platforms like Skype, text messages, email and Whatsapp have become an increasing cause of worry for the community. READ ALSO: Reclaiming Islam for women The study, which interviewed 4,710 women between July and December 2013, reveals that 91.7% of the respondents opposed a second marriage by their husbands. About 73% women surveyed were from families that earned less than Rs 50,000 annually and 55% were married before they reached 18. An overwhelming 82% had no property in their name and 78% were homemakers, indicating absence of income. Over 53% reported having faced domestic violence in their lives while a majority was poorly educated. Most women (93%) were in favour of an arbitration process before divorce and 83.3% believed that codification of Muslim family law would help get justice. Codification of Muslim personal law has been resisted by the community citing religious interference. Responding to this, Soman said, "Government has molly-coddled and appeased those groups which have taken upon themselves to speak for the community. It is our constitutional right. For groups that cite religious freedom as an argument, it is at the expense of women's rights.'' Co-author Noorjehan Safia Niaz said, "An overwhelming number of women demands reforms in Muslim personal law. They want an elaborate codified law based on the Quranic justice framework to cover matters such as age of marriage, divorce procedures, polygamy, maintenance and custody of children.'' Autonomous Posted August 20, 2015 Posted August 20, 2015 Divorces are very common here as well barely anyone gets a peaceful marriage life. I think marriages should be only if the two people are perfectly compatible for each other.
Number Posted August 21, 2015 Posted August 21, 2015 Sorry for asking this sensitive question but I know that in Islam once you are divorced then before reconciliation with same person you have to have physical relations with someone else in the period when you are divorced, and it holds for both men and women. Does the same holds true in case of oral talaq ?

I don't see any secularist here who opposes such laws but talks about secularism. But I have seen RSS supporters welcome beef ban while talking about secularism. There they use the current Indian version of secularism (where everyone is pleased).

There they use the current Indian version of secularism (where everyone is pleased). you comparing ban on slaughtering a particular type of animal with a law that makes women inferior to men! if majority of people were like me, all non-veg (not just beef) would probably have been banned in India by law and we would still be 'true secular'.

Both don't point to true secularism which is about separation of state from religion.

Kalia_Test Posted August 21, 2015 Posted August 21, 2015 I know this statement might rile up a few feathers but from a non-muslim point of view :- - Your holy book authorizes triple Talaq - Your religion DOES NOT allow violation of any of the medieval rules - as it is word of your God or your Prophet. So if you want reforms,etc - then first accept that Islam is not perfect ( no religion is ) and it is anti-women in many forms like divorce, testimony of a woman being equal to half or quarter of a man,etc. If muslim women also keep saying Islam is perfect, then good luck. Triple Talaq is what Islam finds acceptable for all times. India can't help you. P.S - This is not to put down any religion but clear thoughts from a non-muslim. If you accept that Islam is perfect, you have no right to complain about triple Talaq. Unlike Islam, many other religions have scope for reforms - e.g. anything from atheism to animal sacrifice goes in Hinduism and nobody questions if you are a hindu or not.
