Differences Between Dhoni and Kohlis Captaincy Styles

:hysterical: Aggression is being confused with "playing positive" or "determination" by this Indian team now. Their aggression was there to see for all during the first test. Scoring fast at the inopportune time may be aggression but it has nothing to do with playing for a win. Winning requires a playing strategy that addresses the match context. Aggression or defense is not what India wants - we want to play every match in a way that maximizes the probability of win. Eleven Afridis may make the scoring faster, but you can't win matches with that team. Winning requires a right balance of aggression, defense and planning, and playing according to the match situation.
well said.... can't agree more....

I like how well he used the 5 th bowler.....Binny bowled the right amount in the first innings and rightfully did not bowl in the 2nd innings....that was the perfect way to use a 5th bowler. Having said that I think binny did his job decently with the ball even though left a lot to be desired with the bat.

Dhoni's Bhakts Still have the audacity to defend Dhoni :hysterical: That 'coward' didn't even had the courage to chase a small total against WI bowlers. Lets not forget he single-handedly destroyed the career Umesh by not Selecting him against south africa. We all know how Dhoni used to hate 'fast' bowlers. Kohli is already better than him.

Much refreshing than the old ghisa pita washed up msd (but even msd had the flair and was attacking when he was newly appointed the captain, kanpur win against saf was one such example) . Good job Kohli but he needs to stop backing the wrong players and need to go with an extra batsman knowing the middle order is weak (playing an all rounder or 5th bowler just for the sake of it ain't gonna work always)

We will see how he fares when he has some real competition. Dhoni set the bar so low in test captaincy that no one can possibly lower it any further. So it won't be worse than that.
Lol this is true

Dhoni is laidback when it comes to tests in comparison. He expects bowlers to bowl certain, line and length after setting the field. Dhoni can be aggressive. But he won't sustain it for long periods. Also he resigns himself to fate too quickly. "We don't field well we have to accept and move on", "we don't run well", "our death bowling is poor so we have to make up with batting" .. he basically accepts his teams weaknesses too quickly, openly.

1. Goes for a win risking a loss 2. Encourages aggressive behavior, sledging 3. (I think) Believes in training rather than training just to minimum requirement then going shopping/playing football 4. Said in press conference batsmen should back themselves playing aggressive shots not worry about getting out... Rahane gets to 50 with reverse sweep. Out of the 7 4's he hit to get to 100 it included smash over mid off, reverse sweep and conventional sweep Indian batsmen often didn't play much in past. 5. (I think) is starting to encourage tailenders to contribute more with the bat than Dhoni was. End result: -Less draws, more results -Less 5 day games -Higher rate of scoring when compared with Dhoni era's non Sehwag matches -More fights. More fine's for sledging or send off's (eg. Ishant Sharma last game)
Another end result in more losses.

In Dominica? I guess it had become quite tricky for India due the negative bowling tactics adopted by WI, especially by Bishoo. 86 off 15 on a disintegrating fifth day wicket against legside bowling wass too tricky a chase for India. India was doing well when they reached 1/64 off 19 overs, and needed 117 off 28 overs to win the game. But at this point WI started indulging in bowling negative lines, and the frustrated batsmen lost wickets in succession - the next 13 overs produced 28 runs and Indian chances of win went down the drain. The last thirteen overs had produced 28 runs and where was the chance of scoring 86 off 15, especially when two more wickets had fallen down just recently? India had no real chance of winning this match, the WI would continue to bowl negatively, and the match would either end in a draw or Indian loss from there. India could not accelerate without taking considerable risk on that fifth day wicket against that type of bowling. India had taken a 1-0 lead in the series so there wasn't any point playing right into the hands of WI.

He allways blamed his own pacers. Never showed confidence in likes of Aron and Yadav. Backing your pacers is first thing when playing test cricket. One freak delivery from pacers is what it takes to change the test match. They dont need to take all the wickets. For example, In last game fourth inning, day five, that first wicket by Yadav started the collapse.

Dhoni was an accidental captain who got success accidentally.....never had to work for it,so never knew the value of it. It is like the value given to money by a guy who won a lottery and a guy who earned it. He just never cared.....Yes he loved the ODI format a little and he was more hands on at times, even there he did manage to let the game be on cruise control. Virat on the other hand, earned it.....he was never the golden child initially,he came in to the ranks and fought his way to become indispensable in a country that had a lot of guys yearning for this slot. That is the difference right there. People might say Dhoni is from a small town, middle class family, not exactly a cricketing powerhouse region, blah blah etc but he himself did not envision to reach the heights he achieved...things just fell in place for him...here is a guy who did not strive for cricketing excellence and be the best in his profession, all he wanted was to get a sports quota job where as Virat wants to be the next Sachin, the absolute best in his profession.

If anything dhoni had to work much more harder to get to where he got onto. Coming from Ranchi where no one gives a damn about any of your performances is different from coming from an established setup of a Delhi or Mumbai. Dhoni had an air of calmness but doesn't necessarily mean he liked losing or cared less. He was a bad test captain and the bowling attack mde it look even more worse.

Kohli has a better team and things are looking even more promising as Vijay, Ashwin, Rahane and Kohli himself are much more experienced now and will only get better. Between 2011-2015 Dhoni had a team that was either aging (2011-2013) or lacked experience(2013-2015). Now, the team that Dhoni has handed over to Kohli has quite a few players who have evolved and matured from Dhoni's days. Kohli would have fared worse with the team Dhoni had because aggression without right team composition never pays.
True that. No one credits MSD for the team he built with atleast the batsman like ganguly. He handled the transition pretty well imo and the team has been settled to an extent. Just that his deficiencies ad a test captain doesn't make him get credit for that.

Yes, he wasn't that efficient in Tests but he was pretty good in ODIs.

Let's keep the discussion to tactics in this thread. Along with short spells for faster bowlers it seems virat seems involved in the game. Dhoni hardly talked to the bowler

Main point Dhoni never really had confidence in his ability as a test batsmen as he was poor also he was a predominantly ODI player n loved that format, he did not have a passion for test cricket or the brain n willingness to take India to a better position, intact he turned our test team into a laughing stock. His team selection was very poor, and smacked of nepotism, his tactics were defeating the team more with his field placing, approach n his ridiculing n not developing any bowlers who could be spearheads, he got enough time to learn from the greats n that is why we were a good team when he took over but he ruined our team .Dhoni should never have been a test captain n people who rightfully knew this n tried to correct it were cast away (Amarnath), the support of Srinivasan , all the money coming in, he did not take any pride in trying to win tests for India. Kohli is the opposite of Dhoni, he is more aware , on his feet , also plays with passion n takes pride in winning tests for India, he will find ways to make us a better team, only one thing I hope is , if he can be proactive in spotting n nurturing young talent and making his team as our selectors are jokers. India has good talent in batting and our team needs to find wicket talking bowlers, bowlers who can attack n be useful in any conditions, we have Ashwin n Mishjra for now, hope Shami becomes the strike Bowler in test too. Two things we need most is a left arm Pacer, Suyal, A Choudhury, B Sran could be one of them and a decent allrounder well the tough question, whether we punt for Ashwin, K Rahul, Irfan was the best we had but injuries n Dhonis reluctance to have him . It's time Kohli should realize n Dhoni couldn't is that test requires specialist n bits n pieces or one dimensional players like, Jadeja, Bunny will not take you too far,B Kumar or any other bowlers who are Medium pacers will not cut it in test, unless one off friendly surface swo are a liability. Selectors are recycling crap n will amount to nothing in bowling stocks, D Kulkarni, Malaria, Undakunt are crap n lets think like Australians n Pakistan n get bowlers with potential n pace to win tests as skills n control can be learnt but not pace n pace with skills can be lethal. I feel Pujara can be our Dravid kinda player and is vital for test, Dhawan, Rohit should be looked for more closely as flair amounts to nothing without numbers and they seem very vulnerable on sporting tracks. It is time we play K Yadav , Suyal, KJadhav and stop complaining , we do not have talent as that is bull ****. What we lack is thinking, planning , building a team n bench strength and it all comes from faulty selections, lack of vision . Finally we should have separate teams for different formats, test specialist, ODI n T20,also a new captain can be groomed as a T20 captain so Virat doesn't have too much on his plate. We need to have coach like H Streak as he has the vision n willingness is picking n grooming talent n making a better team.India cannot have good coaches from Australia, England , SA as they mostly function in a limited way whereas those country have selectors who have a plan n vision , India needs a more grass root n proactive coaches as the selectors don't do their job

Dhoni was a fantastic ODI player but not the G.O.A.T even in the WK-bat category in ODI's leave alone as a standalone batsman....He was as is obvious to everyone a mediocre test batsman and a terrible even deplorable T20 bat. His captaincy just like his career, was always in cruise control....things just kept happening rather than him going ahead and accomplishing it. Even saying he was at the right place at the right time would be an understatement.....A good player overall who happened to be in the best place possible at the best possible time. I will be the first one to say it....Saha is terrible and not in Dhoni's league by any means....still no one missed Dhoni at all which shows how much more harmful his captaincy was than his value as a player.
