IF Mohinder Amarnath were playing today

Ok a bit of sarcasm on Ind's bowling now, anyways, but if Amarnath were playing today, would he be the Ind's coolest modern all-rounder - he was a trundler (now bowlers like him open bowling for Ind) and ofc, his batting record is exceptional esp. against fearsome pace attacks?

He was a world cup winning all-rounder with MOM award in semi final AND final of the world cup. Forget all-round performance, let the current bunch of trundlers win back to back MOM award in any series, then we can start comparing.

Dunno about all rounder but Amarnath gets a pass every time in my book. The way that man faced pace in his prime, I'm surprised his massive steel cojones don't jingle jangle every time he walked to the pitch.

Mohinder Amarnath was hailed as the best batsman of fast bowling by Viv Richards after the 1982-83 series in WI. This was followed by his memorable 1983 WC performances. Problem with Jimmy was that he was very slow at times, and his successes were followed by long periods of failure. He never had consistency over a long period of time and selectors sometimes dropped him for that (most notable was his poor scores during the 1983-84 series against WI in India; remarkable failure since he had a purple patch prior to that). Gutsy and technical accurate, but not consistent. He was an under-rated bowler in swinging conditions, but he was even slower than our current trundlers. His bowling was dibbly dobbly at best.

I have a lot of respect for Amarnath, the test batsman. He was very good against genuine fast bowling and a gutsy fighter who  could hang in there when the chips were down. He was more an accumulator of runs. He was often criticized for slow batting in the ODIs and had a strike rate of 57 which was on the lower side even by '80s standards.

As a bowler, he was basically a part time military medium pacer. Did not bowl much in tests and send down around 5 overs or so in a general ODI match he played. Did not take that many wickets usually.

The 1983 World Cup was played in England which is typically very conducive to medium paced swing bowling. Amarnath, Sandhu, Binny etc. were ideal bowlers for those conditions and , to their credit, they made full use of the situation. Not everyone can make use of favourable conditions but Amarnath did and he deserves a lot of praise for that.

Jimmy was a big match player who could perform on the big stage and that is something special.
