Is Joe Root the best English batsman you have seen?

Most of his tons and double tons have come in England, if he can replicate that in the SC ( which he hasnt done yet) then yes i will rate him along with Kohli as one the best batsmen of this generation.

No, batsman you have seen which is different for everyone, the last 20 years in my case.

Sorry....I  did no read the name of the thread carefully.  I have seen English batsmen in the last 32 years.  In that period, they have generally lacked the " impact " factor. KP is the best I have seen but then again he is actually from S.A.

 

I have never seen a really great English batsman of English  ethnicity. Root maybe the first one if he can score all over the world. I will wait 3 years or so before forming a definitive opinion.

Easily the best from England. Too early to call, but he will end up as the chief of English line-up. Consistent and in-command of all 3 formats. KP was another one, but turned into a jerk-off.

wow just realized Eng was the one to invent game yet they have nothing of gr8 soughts like Legend of fast bowlers, batsman, spinner may be you can consider botham in all rounder but not many in the leagues of extra ordinary players which almost all countries have .

Have you watched Graham Gooch bat ?

How high would you rate him ?

Yes, I have.   Gooch was a very ordinary batsman during a very large part of his career.

 

In the last 5 years, from roughly around 1990,  he played some amazing cricket.  I remember that he was a very consistent batsman during that time and scored prolifically.  During that phase, he was a very good batter but he won't be considered among the greats. His approach to batting was very English.

Has to be KP....in tests it is Cook...Root has a long way to go......on tailunt alone KP was leagues ahead....I have seen him play some unbelievable shots almost like ABDV and Rohit.

 

Statistically over all formats...Root will end up as the best.

He scored a 300 in the 1st innings and a 100 in the 2nd....Also The match was huge controversy because Azhar decided to bat 2nd on a flattish pitch...back then people attributed to his immaturity and inexperience as a captain.....but now we might have other theories to his decision.

i remember Gooch sweeping every ball in that mammoth total and wondering why no fielders are being placed in that area..

Just checked the scorecard, I know that Lord's has always been a good batting pitch but 333 at a strike rate of nearly 70 with 43 fours and 3 sixes is unusual in England. Gooch was great against fast bowlers but struggled against medium pacers (Terry Alderman's bunny), so how come Kapil Dev did not get him out early in that innings is anyone's guess.

I must be in a minority. I can see his game falling to pieces. He will average 47 maximum if and when he gets to 8,000 runs.

He is if you were born in 2010. England had some amazing batsmen in the past. In the 90's you had Thorpe, who was fantastic. we had KP who was and still is a magnificent player. Cook and Trott are also brilliant. Before you had Gower, Gooch etc all. I am not even going to the 70's and 60's. Root is a fantastic player but calling him the best English player would be premature at the moment.
