velu Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 Quote It has been in the pipeline for a few years now. But on Tuesday, the Mamata Banerjee cabinet finally gave a nod to change West Bengal's name to either Banga or Bangla. The choice in English is simpler: Bengal. The need for a change of name was voiced by Banerjee a few years ago, during her first term as the state’s chief minister, essentially for practical reasons of state's administration. Representatives of the state at both the bureaucratic as well as at the political levels found themselves speaking at the fag end of national level meetings simply because the W of West Bengal featured way down the alphabetical order. This, Banerjee argued, caused problems since it resulted in the state's voice remaining at best neglected or, at worst, unheard. Changing the name to Banga or Bangla would certainly enable the state to climb the alphabetical ladder. The final push to the cause of change came after Banerjee returned from Delhi last week after attending the chief minister's meet where she was the most vocal on the issue of protecting the federal rights of the states. Responses from the academic circles in Kolkata have been mixed. There are some who have welcomed this change on grounds that the name West Bengal has lost its relevance since East Bengal, which now assumes the geographical territory of Bangladesh, no longer exists in India. Others, however, aren't happy since they feel that the name West Bengal is symbolic to the history of this part of the country, especially its partition. But ahead of the 2019 general elections a fresh identity for Mamata Banerjee and her government could mark a fresh start towards a greater political goal. http://www.indiancricketfans.com/forums/forum/17-chit-chat/?do=add changing the name of the state so that it comes in the beginning of the list why dont mamta just rename west bengal it to 0_west_bengal ? Bangalis
zen Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 The reasons for changing the name are not spot on but west bengal can be simply "bengal"

Adi_91 Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 What's in a name? She is very well playing the victim card that West Bengal is left out behind by the centre. Good enough for 2019, but nothing good for the people.
beetle Posted August 3, 2016 Posted August 3, 2016 Why Banga ...why not make it bonga straigt away? After five years thy will change banga to bonga.... When people have nothing to show in terms of work done...they resort to stupid name changes....like that stupid CM of Haryana changed Gurgaon to Gurugram.Apne Baap ka maal hai....change kar do.
