What's with Indian openers and injuries? And who is the next backup opening option.

Vijay Rahul Dhawan have all been in and out owing to injuries since SL tour and now even ghambir. We need two back-up openers in the squad every time. Which beings me to...apart from these 4, is mukund the next direct option ? and will Gambit be chosen over Dhawan in the vEng squad ?

Vijay and Rahul should be our main openers with Dhawan and Herwadkar as backup.

Herwadkar is a one-season wonder AFAIK?  I thought Mukund has been in the mix a bit longer?  Who were the openers for the 4 day games with Aus A recently?

There is nothing wrong in Gambhir's selection just because he is 35 and it is not backward step...If not Gambhir then India should stick with Rahul and Vijay with Pujara back up as an opener in case of injury..Pandey should be next in line of test team because we have not any backup other than talent in middle order.

Hopefully Mukund is next in line, but Pujara  should open if no one else is fit... beyond that Fazal and Herwadkar - though I hope Fazal does  not make the squad. Then we are into Robin Uthappa territory

I hope Gambo is not seriously injured.  On turning tracks he is a very good replacement for a season or so, and compared to Dhawan, he may even be an upgrade.
