China fixing Pakistan energy infrastructure could boost GDP growth to 7% per year and enable a new Asian Tiger economy by 2018

Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is betting on a $21 billion Chinese-backed splurge on energy projects to boost the economy—and his re-election bid.

More than 10,000 Chinese workers are now building at least 10 partly Beijing-financed energy projects across Pakistan that are set to grow the country’s energy output by 60% within two years in the first major boost to supply in two decades.Mr. Sharif’s government plans to inaugurate a nuclear plant this month and a pipeline network in January that will carry large-scale gas imports upcountry.

Mr. Sharif’s promise to solve the electricity crisis propelled him to office at a time when the energy deficit was knocking some 2 percentage points off growth, economists say, stifling industry and leaving school children to study by candlelight.

Pakistan’s economic growth has risen to almost 5% annually under Mr. Sharif’ and his government set a 7% target for the years ahead. That, his government hopes, will boost the moribund private sector, reduce unemployment and provide youth with more alternatives to extremism.

Mr. Sharif’s plan depends heavily on China, which is translating its long-term strategic ties with Pakistan into an economic partnership, part of a broader infrastructure push across Eurasia. China is financing many plants as commercial investments. But to expedite projects, the Pakistani government is funding some power stations in the run up to the election, including three gas-fired plants in Mr. Sharif’s home province of Punjab. The eventual aim is to more than double Pakistan’s current output of around 16,000 megawatts.

India is billion population nations with the highest poverty comparatively. Comparison to the world never mind Pakistan, India is on the top of the list. The reason Pakistan is not in the list because of its population that falls within 171 million population.

You are not that stupid to discount the billion population, do you? Math is certainly not your friend. And as for the rest, Defence Forum Pakistan is your best friend to gather latest update on CPEC including Russia that just confirmed being part of CPEC, not to mention the largest steel mills is now approved in CPEC. :--D

Most importantly, India is not rich since you guys are dependent on Chinese goods. You guys don't have resource to offer nor your currency. Do you realize that you are handing out your money to Chinese which in return feeding the economy of Pakistan through the International port [real money]? Not to mention Pakistan is blessed with the unused resources that requires the heavy investment on the refinery technology which is matter of time while India with poor resource to none never mind struggling to fulfill the basic necessity like toilets in India.

India is poor by currency, resource and by economy since you are at the mercy of USA [currency], China [goods] and foreign policy [others struggle so they increase the market that India can compete with] that depends on others doing poor since you guys cannot even offer competitive edge either. India is far too poor by long shot and surrounded by neighbors that are not fan of India.

1. I am not going anywhere. YOU made a claim. I asked for evidence. YOU have the obligation to provide evidence, which is standard procedure for ANYONE making a claim. I guess you didnt learn that in school.

2. USA will have more poor people than Togo. Coz USA's population is 300 million+ and Togo's population is 7.5 million. Ie. 40 times less. Doesn't mean USA is poorer than Togo. Also, learn some basic English. Proportionately means in proportion- its a comparative indicator.
Proportionately, there are more poor people in Pakistan than in India. This is because there are 39% people in Pakistan below its poverty line and there are 23% Indians below its poverty line. That means, proportionately, Pakistan is poorer

3. I realize that nations with worthless people - like yours and many gulf arab nations- are worth only what they can dig out of the ground or chop down. But nations with hardworking & intelligent people don't need any resources of their own to prosper. Germany, Japan, Korea- they are all poor in resources and extremely rich. Similarly, India is poor in resources but far richer than Pakistan- as i showed with EVIDENCE (Something you don't have), an average Indian is 33% richer than the average Pakistani.

PS: Post evidence or be man enough to admit you lied. Still waiting for evidence that Germany and UK are involved in CPEC.

Pak media crying day in day out about how China is giving nothing to Pak for free but loans on interest 5 times higher than World Bank and IMF.

China even gets their prisoners out to come out and do labor jobs in CPEC but would not hire Pakistanis. LOLZZZ..

The electricity and power that China will provide are unaffordable  and have shut down many Pak factories.

Pak is being treated worst than slaves and criminals. China can do what it wants in Pak. What a shameless disgraceful bunch.

This is NOT us Indians saying, its Pak's own media.

We should talk to the Chinese for parts of our land occupied by Pakistan ? So you admit then that they are your Maalik ?

Last i checked, this thread is about CPEC and you asked what is our problem with CPEC and many of us have said that our problem is it passes through our land under occupation by Pakistan. Since CPEC doesnt go through Chinese-occupied Ladakh, that sector is irrelevant to this thread, no ?

You have just set yourself up. The next time your country sends rats on a one way mission to our state of Jammu and Kashmir, India will hit back and rupture the  CPEC infrastructure that is in your occupied Kashmir in self defense.

No. read CPEC. Chinese are very clear that they are not responsible for Pakistan occupied part. However there are few things Pakistan has done

1. It has killed concept of separate Kashmir for good. No wonder separatist leaders are irked.

2. It has made it more difficult for India to retake Kashmir. Not that if India was ever going to do but Pakistan has secured PoK. It also guarntees India that it no more need to talk to Pakistan on kashmir and can annul various sections like 370 in its Constitution. But that is few years down the line.

3. Pakistan did a Uri attack considering it as BAU activity without realised it is now stuck in its own design. Check Pakistani Government bond yeild for last few months. It has simply jumped. Till CPEC EMI is sorted, It can not afford even one statement from Indian foreign office which may mean a bomb may come flying on CPEC.

My take, India is busy on internal issues, but is very well aware to ensure EMI for Pakistan keeps on increasing till they agree for Indo Pakistan Afghan Iran trade route. And if Pakistan is really honest about peace, It should stop blocking trade routes of its actual neighbors.

Pakistan has no source of income to service the EMIs. And China's economy is in such deep shit that they are going to go through atleast 7-8 years of no growth or negative growth when the massive credit fueled real estate bubble in China bursts.

Most wealthy well informed Chinese are getting rid of China assets and have gone on a crazy buying spree in California and VanCouver Canada. This is just one among many signs of China's bubble on the verge of bursting and causing a decade long crisis atleast.

Under such circumstances they are in no position to wave off or go soft on Pak loans.

Since our dishonest, deceptive, treacherous and conniving subhuman neighbour to our east have shown absolute contempt for India's reservations about traversing PoK, India should show the balls to engage in massive infrastructure works in Arunachal Pradesh, inviting foreign partners. At the same time have stronger diplomatic relations with Taiwan. If China has no respect for India's  " One-India " as non-negotiable, India must show China the middle finger on its " core " One- China policy.

Can you give a guarantee that you will not cry when CPEC gets tossed into the dustbin within the next 10 years or sooner?

It doesn't work that way. When someone occupies a property illegally and then hires a contractor to develop it, the city goes after the illegal occupant, not the contractor. The contractor assumes the risk of being stopped/barred from recouperating costs of developing an illegal property. However the case is against the illegal occupant.
