How Tamil Nadu cops ensured calm amid anguish

CHENNAI: The day after the demise of former chief minister J Jayalalithaa, fear of violence erupting was palpable across the state. Many remembered the period after former chief minister M G Ramachandran's death in December 1987 when grieving supporters of the matinee idol-turned politician ran amok, mainly in Chennai.

On Tuesday, Tamil Nadu, known for hero worship and extreme reactions over the death of a mass leader, remained completely free of violence. There was not a single suicide bid. This, many feel, was due to the change in the people's mindset and also because of the precautionary measures put in place.

In Coimbatore, the day was marked by silent processions, loyal party cadres tonsuring their heads and paying tributes to portraits of Jayalalithaa at street corners, under the gaze of police personnel. In Trichy and Madurai too, police were in control of the situation as elsewhere in the state.

The security arrangements in Chennai were elaborate, with 10,000 policemen deployed to maintain law and order. Between Rajaji Hall on Anna Salai, where the late chief minister's body lay since Monday night, and the MGR memorial on the Marina beach, where she was buried on Tuesday evening, at least 2,000 policemen, including personnel of the swift action group and rapid action force, kept things under control.

Plainclothes policemen cruised the streets on bikes and stray incidents were quickle brought under control. On Wallajah Road, when two men hurled a stone on the windshield of an autorickshaw, the autorickshaw driver didn't stop, but plainclothes policemen nabbed the duo and thrashed them before chasing them away.

Almost all shops and showrooms remained closed almost throughout the day. Chennai police commissioner S George said they didn't want to take chances. "We provided sufficient protection across the city."

Vehicles fitted with CCTV cameras were parked at Rajaji Hall, where Jayalalithaa's body lay for nearly 12 hours, to monitor the stream of visitors pouring in. "We have been using vehicles fitted with CCTV camera to maintain law and order at many protest venues in the city. We used the same strategy at Rajaji Hall," said a senior police officer.

Even after the funeral ceremony ended around 6pm, police personnel remained there to ensure no AIADMK worker lingered. "There was no untoward incident anywhere in the city," a senior police officer said.

The police force came in for praise from the comissioner for providing security to all the VVIPs, including President Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda and 15 chief ministers.

@BeautifulGame  qui audet Tamil trolliscitur?

You should translate that for the benefit of us lesser mortals.

It's a tricky one to translate because the content was satirical in nature .It kinda means

No leader who has gone to Apollo has survived

Anna

Rajaji

Jayalalitha

Cho

That's why you see ! The boat (a mock name used for Karunanithi) always goes to Cauvery(the hospital he is admitted ).

small correction. PMK and DMDK ready to ally with BJP subject to BJP fighting under their projected CM candidate. BJP refused. Looking at things now, its for the best. In the bypolls conducted BJP got more votes than PMK and DMDK.

DMDK is as good as dead. PMK as well, their vote share is concentrated in the north but its going to be hard for them to sustain themselves for the next few years. BJP has no such issues, it has funds and manpower at its disposal. Ramadoss may want to establish his son, but he needs to be realistic.

PMK knows it limitations and were willing to play second fiddle to BJP..

but problem is BJP vastly overrated captain and underrated itself  .. BJP gave 14 seats to DMDK

i think BJP is the third largest party in TN and probably can increase its vote share to close 10 from the current 5/6 %

Looks like Sasikala will be the dominant force of the party now .

Understandable for now as majority of ADMK MLAs are her loyalists but can't see it going down well with their cadres or the general public.

Will be interesting how much Pannerselvam is projected as the face of the party in 2019 elections

He is our greatest ever CM and we owe him most of our development in the state to his visionary.

The good thing with Kazhagams (both DMK and ADMK ) was that they continued to follow on that development path
