I would assume the old fart karunanidhi being a poor guy wanted equal rights for everyone is impressed by communist ideas and named his son Stalin. MK Stalin was born in 1953 .At the time Joseph Stalin was not only considered the greatest leader of Communism but also the one who actually defeated Hitler (despite the American narrative)

Come on until the 1960s even the western world didn't know much about the scope of great purge and even then it was mostly dismissed as American propaganda in communist world for some time .
