Calling it now - Ashwin will win us a series in South Africa and Australia

Just have this gut feeling. Yeah its not the same great aussie team anymore but still a formidable opponent at home nonetheless. These two achievements are left that I am yearning for most. I badly want to see us win a test series in both these places. We were so close in 2007 in Australia if not for Bucknor and if we had proper match practice before the series started. We came awfully close in 2006 in SA before that dreadful Sachin innings that got us nowhere and the awful tail we had. We came awfully close too in cape town in 2010 before freaking Kallis ruined everything.

 

 

Not afraid to call this one, Ashwin WILL win us a test series in Aus and SAF.

We will win and I hope Ashwin does well. I see Bhuvi dominating there and our pacers performing well. I can see heroics from Kohli and Rahane on both the places and also in England.

For the most part, our pace bowlers have done ok. They just need more chances and a better captain in my opinion. These tours are about 17 months away but I have a good feeling after seeing Ashwin bowl.

Reality is that for spinners to win test matches in places like Eng/Aus/SA/NZ, rest of the team has to first set the game up.  A combination of adequate bowling by seamers and batting clicking enough to have scoreboard pressure, or at least Parity going into the second.  Once this pre-requisite is met, the spinner has to find ways to be effective enough given the non-SG ball, and wicket conditions.  Like I posted in another thread, we need to have 3 seamers who can be consistently effective without letting oppo. batsmen off the hook.  

 

Looking at our team personnel, there's every reason to think we can set the game up to give Ash opportunties to win a game. And looking at his evolution as a bowler, his mindset and the arsenal of variation he can call upon with control, there's every reason to believe he will get the job done.

True. Both the matches in south africa the 3rd seamer shat the bed. in 2006, Sree and Zak bowled well but Munaf didnt bowl in the 2nd innings. not sure if we would have won but it would have been close. In 2011, Sreesanth was leaking runs. And the fast bowlers were ineffective in the 2nd innings. Freaking Kallis

Ishant has been very economical in recent times. He doesnt take wickets but very economical. He would be an excellent 3rd seamer.

When you claim that I go overboard with some threads, you have to realize you are doing the same (in the opposite direction) with this thread. Just that - since you are saying "good feel thing" (India will win) - it does not seem obvious that it's just the same thing as how I write in the opposite direction at times. We are all passionate about cricket, just that differing personalities.

 

Nevertheless - Coming to the thread - Winning away series will depend on Batting Ability (and current form) in those conditions and our Seamers. Spinner role will be minor, and in Aus leg spinner is more potent than offspin. I feel that the batting form (in the alien conditions) of our top 4 will be more critical than anything. And 2 seamers + Hardik Pandya (or such) will have to click - since we need extra batsman in the 11, unlike in Asia. Ashwin will have very minor role in those conditions.

More than Ashwin, I have high hopes from Jadeja. I think he will do and become better away test bowler than Kumble.

 

Kumble was a horrible bowler away from home, mainky because he lacked patience. He wanted quick results like Indian pitches used to give him.

 

Jadeja is similar bowler to Kumble who seems to have more patience. He does not turn as big as Ashwin and his accuracy can get us lot of wickets and can put plenty of pressure on the oppositions. The only problem is that we might play just one spinner a lot of times and that would be Ashwin right now. I hope at times we play 3-2 bowling combo and Jadeja can get more games so he can do some damage overseas.

The difference is you whine constantly. Day and night. you whine about everything. I'm having this gut feeling. If you dont like it dont open the thread. By the way you said we lost the mumbai test. Not happy with the outcome eh?

I honestly don't see Ashwin running through batting line ups in SA and Australia....I think he is one of the best batsmen against swing and pace(yes honestly) in the lineup.... but if he takes 2-3 wickets per innings and plays up to his batting potential,he might win a series with his all round performances.

 

Yes he might have that odd game where he will perform exceptionally with the ball,but when I see Ash winning series for us on tough tours,I expect him to do that on his all-round capabilities and not on bowling alone(which is an unfair expectation)

Bhajji won us a test in Druban. Herath won a test for SL in SA.Ajmal also won Pakistani a test but he's a chucker so...

As I said...spinners will win you the odd test in overseas condition...but I think we can't just put Ashwin in that category...he is above that...he is one of the best A.R's in the world right now.

 

You are talking about an entire series,for that it is an uphill task for a spinner...may happen or may not..can't say...but I think Ashwin the allrounder will definitely win us some high profile overseas series-I think that has a bigger chance of happening...either ways your prediction might pan out.
