CG Posted January 5, 2017 Posted January 5, 2017 Because his team achieved great success. No one cares about win percentage nonsense apart from stats obsesses . Its what trophies that matter. His success was not even close to what Waugh or ponting achieved but none would put them above him.

And its upto the Captain to bring that by handling the pressure better.

Because he build them from ground up and then his team achieved great success even after he left. Both Ponting and Waugh were just repeating what their predecessor has achieved. Also Ponting's legacy is really dented by losing every Ashes series he captain in England.
CG Posted January 5, 2017 Posted January 5, 2017 And its upto the Captain to bring that by handling the pressure better. Lol no .It's up to each individual captain can't bat or ball for them. You are a professional you should now it works in every field.Actually if I look Sehwag continued to fail in finals under Dhoni too.

That's what I am saying. Not only stats or winning percentage would make u a great captain.Ganguly build a team after match fixing saga.Dhoni took young team to win t20 WC.Built for future likes of Rohit, kohli.I would judge him.by that.

Yes they can.Thats why you see in foottball for ex,when coaches are changed team performances improve. A great leader will make a team better and will bring better performances. Its there responsibility to inspire performance from their fellow players.Whether by leading by example or motivation or just tactics or whatever means.
coffee_rules Posted January 5, 2017 Posted January 5, 2017 A captain is as good as the team. So a great captain needs a great team that responds.

Sajid_Rana Posted January 5, 2017 Posted January 5, 2017 Imran Khan who can inspire ordinary team play like cornered tigers by setting example and win World Cups away from home.
BeautifulGame Posted January 5, 2017 Posted January 5, 2017 SWarne rates Mark Taylor and Waugh over Ponting, even though Ponting has a better record as a captain. Aussies and England care more about Ashes than anything else though. Taylor and Waugh didn't lose a single ashes but Pointing lost every Ashes he captained in England . Infact Warne still even today blames Pointing for the loss in 2005 for choosing to bowl first in Edgebaston . coffee_rules 1

IK is good, but no way his team was ordinary. Great bowlers - Wasim, Waqar, Great batsmen - Dawood-ka-samdhi, Salim Malik and Inzi. He couldn't do much if he had a team like Misbah has. Misbah got Pak to #1 team ..he is much better than IK!

He inherited an already built team it like Ponting did from Steve Waugh. express bowling and raki05 2
BeautifulGame Posted January 5, 2017 Posted January 5, 2017 Dhoni did not build any team. He inherited an already built team it like Ponting did from Steve Waugh. He inherited a team that got knocked out of world cup to Bangladesh and at first round in Champions trophy at Home.A team that has chocked in 15 finals before. Pointing inherited a team that has won world cup .

The amount of chances he gave to players like Raina, Ashwin, Jadeja, and actually got the best out of them, no one would have given that. Also, all these guys played a big role in India's success recently. Raina did well in world cup and Ashwin-Jadeja have just taken over Indian bowling when playing home. Dhoni also gave Kohli no. 3 position, promoted Pujara in Australia series when we were needing just 100 odd left. Then took him to South Africa with Tendulkar and Laxman still around. Lord 1

There was Dravid who captained the team for 3 years and we saw huge success in that period where we mae a world record of 17 chases in a row. You are certainly mixing up things from Ganguly's tenure to later when Dhoni became captain. Actually, we were beating every team before 2007 WC and that set back was more due to complacency rather than because the team was poor.

In only one ODI world cup .... was the finalist in a tournament held in South Africa and lost in the final to the best ever ODI team In zero World T20s and 2 Champions Trophy out of which he won 1. never got a chance to captain a World Cup in India. Dhoni captained India... In 2 ODI World Cups....won 1 played in India and reached SF in the one held in Australia. In 6 World T20s....won 1 played in South Africa and was the finalist in another played in Bangladesh. and in 2 Champions Trophy out of which he won 1. Captained 1 ODI world Cup and 1 World T20 in India. As Dhoni has actually won 1 World Cup and 1 World T20....that would make him the best LOI captain from India. But....it would be unfair to compare his captaincy with Ganguly in ICC events as Ganguly never got a chance to captain a World Cup in India and did not get a chance to captain in a World T20 at all while Dhoni captained in 6 and won 1. Both have won 1 Champions trophy each. Edited January 5, 2017 by express bowling Mosher 1
Lannister Posted January 5, 2017 Posted January 5, 2017 It's hard to rate captains based on their success in LOIs alone. A true aukaat of a captain will come out in Test matches when chips are down and how he motivate his players to stay alive over 5 days of harsh cricket. Ponting and Smith are the best I have ever seen. They both are aggressive and good at managing players.

Yes he was dropped a few times unfairly under Chappel, but he did have a serious dip of form where it was just annoying to see his scores. All those maggi jokes started for a reason. Dhoni did not have such crazy run. When you are captain, you also have to perform and lead from the front with the bat. He did not do that and hence he had to give away the captaincy eventually. Dhoni never had such crazy poor run of form.
