sandeep Posted January 8, 2017 Posted January 8, 2017 Best chance for Dhoni to succeed at this point is #4 - any lower than that, and his current struggles will be under the scanner even more. The cost for this is that someone like Pandey, who also is the type of batsman that would do better at #4 than at #5 will need to be at 5. If Hardik Pandya does decent with the bat at #7 that will go a long way in taking the pressure off the lineup - we simply have not been able to fill the Suresh Raina hole at #6 - the guy who can give you run-a-ball or better 30+ scores with a fair degree of consistency against international bowling. Adding an older Yuvi to this mix is also a bit of a question mark, he too, is slowing down a bit and needs a bit of time to get rolling. But I don't see any spot other than 5/6 for him if he plays. I think its totally fair to allow Dhoni an extended run at #4, something he has not gotten - and something he has earned the right for. He has done the donkey's work in the lower order for a decade - if we can give Project Raina an extended run at 4, why not MS? Its not like someone else has made that spot his own by scoring consistent runs anyway. I believe MS, even at 80% of his best, can do well at #4. The question to be answered is, whether he's at 80% of his best, or much lower? If he can't do well over the course of 6-7 games, then sentiment goes out the window. We can't afford to give him 15 games to work it out. Not when we have so many quality options burning their career primes on the bench.

He knows that Kohli is India's best batsman and India's best chance to win big games is when Kohli gets support. Not every game Kohli is going to single handedly win games. He needs support and Dhoni is the right man to provide that at this time. Kohli's peak of the career where he threatens to break plenty of world records in ODI's warrants support of a batsman who averages 50 and can actually help Kohli relax even more and score more consistently without burning out or taking pressure by himself. This Kohli's patch deserves more victories and Kohli and Dhoni together batting for 20 overs can cause lot of problems for any bowling attack. And the line up will look more lethal if we manage to get good starts from our openers. sandeep 1

Stats also prove like you said that Dhoni has struggle too. Yes, no doubt about that he has compared to his past. Yes, he might not be the same big massive hitter, but he can not produce a more than run a ball, or run a ball inning every time, when we have struggled. We have lost plenty of games in last 2-3 years and our whole batting has been part of that problem, along with of course our bowling. If Kohli or Sharma would have gone early, we have struggled fair bit and that has put plenty of pressure on Dhoni to keep his wicket and ensure he doesn't get out early to spark a collapse. This is actually the prime reason why he wants to come at no. 4 and give a better hand to Kohl, as they need someone solid in the middle order, as he as already scored lot of runs. Anyways, the game has changed, as long as you can keep your wickets till 35th over, you can always score runs in the end, and that is what we are trying to do with Dhoni at 4 and Kohli at 3. If both of these guys are set till 35th over, we are looking at chasing most games successfully or setting up bigger totals. How Indian batting has struggled? Kohli, Rohit both averaging 50+, dhawan his usual 40+. Rahane is unfit for ODIs and Raina has past it. We need to at least look beyond Rahane and Raina for ODIs. Ironhide and raki05 2

When constructing an innings in the top order he doesnt need to go for big every other over which is a massive difference. Even with his slowed down reflexes he has been excellent in T20s in recent times .Having said all this he obviously need to retire/dropped if he struggles at no.4 as well.
