No one fancy nair as odi player ?

Could be quite good as he is adept at improvisation. He went from 200 to 300 very quickly in 80 odd deliveries despite the English keeping most fielders in the deep.

He is very good at placing the ball and can use power whenever required.

But, he is someone who  should bat between 3 to 5 IMHO

We have Kohli and Dhoni in 2 of these positions and Rahul in another in all probability

When any of these positions open up, Nair can be a very good replacement.

You left out Manish Pandey - he is also a guy who slots in better in 3 to 5 better than anywhere else.  So hard for Nair to get a look in at the moment.  Plus Team likes to carry Jinx as a spare batsman in the squad, although reading between the lines Kumble has at least spelled out that Rahane is only a contender for top order (opener) and not much else  - I hope that's what he means.  Rahane is going the VVS route as far as ODIs are concerned.  Both guys would only have succeeded in ODIs in the top 3, but never got established at those spots.

Rahul

Pant

Kohli

Jadhav

Pandey

Raina

Pandya

Kuldeep

Ashwin

Umesh

Bumrah/Bhuvi

Now this is one top class team'

Sad to see people not rating Jadhav. He is the only one in domestics to have 50 plus average with a strike rate above 100

On topic, I still don't understand how Jadeja makes it to everyone's LOI

he has played t20 world cups and 50

over World Cup. Tell me one single match where he performed

Jadeja has played close to 150 LOI, but the bugger scored only 1 match winning 50!

This post post is only for twenty20

My twenty20 side will always have Jadeja, great fielder, can bowl 4 quick overs and stay economical in any conditions. He is a full twenty2020 package, great catcher, great fielder, can hit the ball down the order and is pretty economical bowler who will make batsmen do crazy things on the other end.

He was our unsung hero of 3-0 twenty20 series victory down under. Finch and party were going bezerk every game and it looked always that our 200 run total would get chased down easily by Aussies but Jadeja's 4 over spells in the middle would set Australia backwards and behind the run rate. I will pick Jadeja over Ashwin in 2020 any day.

Need to see a little bit of more Krunal Pandya....Hardik was fast tracked because he had batting ability+could hit 140K's-so he was at the right place at the right time-so totally ok with that

Krunal had one good IPL season and so did Negi and we say how he turned out...Is Krunal better than Axar and Negi?

Certainly yes. Those two are primarily bowlers who can bat. krunal is a batsman who can bowl. Unfortunately for him, he has been very unlucky with injuries, got injured badly in the first Ranji game of the season, had to undergo surgery.

Other than that one innings in which he was slogging couple of legbreak bowlers and one left arm spinner (all turning into him), what has Krunal done?

He scored 237 runs last IPL at an SR of 191, 13 sixes and 22 fours with an average of 39 and not just one big innings. Also, he did not just bash spinners, he hit Zak too in that same innings and his 6 on Zak was probably the best shot of the match.

Yes, you need a combination of batsmen, not just one type of batsmen. Aussie middle order today had Lynn, Maxwell, Marsh at 4, 5. 6...all slam bang players. Lynn made his debut, might improve in future but both Lynn and Maxwell played like it was a T20. Didn't watch Marsh batting. Your 3 out of top 4 batsman must know how to build and play long innings in ODIs and even #5 not just slam bang. Because even best of the hitters cant go slam bang successfully from ball 1.

Would definitely get rid of Dhawan, he had his moment under the sun and now it's time to go. Rahane to replace Dhawan *depending* on how he goes as an opener in this series and, subsequently, in the IPL. Yes, I still have faith in that man.

Rohit would continue this year for me but closely monitored. Same with Dhoni because, like everyone else, I am keen to see if he can truly reinvent his game. Also, his pedigree as an accumulator in middle overs remains undiluted. This is valuable as we can see from Australia's innings today against Paksters. A team packed with T20 cowboys cannot hack it in ODIs.

Now we come to hitters who can light it up from the get go. I feel that, since our team is already full of stroke makers, we do not need to obsess over power hitters a la Maxwell/Buttler/Pollard and what have you. This is not to say we shouldn't welcome such players or look out for them. Only that there are more than one way to skin the limited overs cat.

Krunal (EB mentioned him above) impressed me a lot, his brother is in the mix, and we are all excited about Pant. DJ`Hood forcing himself in the conversation as well. Given the insane number of talent coming through, I wouldn't mind some audition and experiments for the lower order.

Here's my team, then.

Rahane

Hitman

VK

KLR

Dhoni

Pant

H Pandya

Ashwin/Krunal/Jadeja/DJ`Hood

Ashwin/Krunal/Jadeja/DJ`Hood

Shami

Bumrah

Reserve pacers - Bhuvi, Ishant

UR are a rare person who still beilves in rahane in Odi

Btw who is ur 6th bowler, incase one of ur bowlers have an off day or even gets injured.

Deepak hooda as one of main spinners, the guy hardly bowled much in this domestic season n u migh consider him as one of the option without even having a 6th bowler, This team is in for phainty one day. Then rahane at top

Proper batting  combination for ODIs nowadays should be --

1. Proper batsman

2. Quick starting proper batsman

3. Proper batsman

4. Proper batsman who can hit big if needed

5. Proper batsman who can improvise and hit big when needed

6. Big hitter decent batsman  + part-time bowler

7. Big hitter + proper bowler

8. Big hitter + proper bowler

--   All proper batsmen should be able to bat at a good SR and maintain a good RR from the start of their innings.

Like current England odi lineup of explosive openers Hales & Roy followed by Root, good wicket keeper batsman in Butler,Bairstov & followed by allrounders Stokes,Woakes,Moeen,Rashid. Even Willey,Plunkett can be counted to add some runs.

All the slots pretty much answers themselves-

1. Proper batsman- Rohit,Nair(an option i wud like to see in A-games), KL Rahul ( test opener, dnt knw why people want him to waste at 5,6)

2. Quick starting proper batsman- Pant, kishen, Rahul

3. Proper batsman- Kohli (Dont fiddle with his position at all)

4. Proper batsman who can hit big if needed- (Rahul, Nair, Hooda, Dhoni)

5. Proper batsman who can improvise and hit big when needed- Dhoni, Sarfraz(somewhere in future)

6. Big hitter decent batsman  + part-time bowler- Yuvraj(he still is a good hitter), hooda, krunal, Raina

7. Big hitter + proper bowler- Hardik, Krunal

8. Big hitter + proper bowler-  this is where i disagree, his 1st job is to be a match winner with bowling (ashwin, kuldeep and jadeja arent big hitter. Jadeja can but hasnt been successful at that. Bhajji was good at it)

The problem here of course is that you are adopting a formulaic approach to the game that will come back to bite you in the butt. Always look at the available resources first and then devise the best strategy around them instead of choosing players based on formulas.

We have avl resources for all mentioned above, just need to take some harsh calls trust right young players.

Why be scared to try something. We have nothing to loose as we havent been doing well in odi for few yrs.
