For all the talk of flat pitches and importance of toss (opposition won 9 tosses) most foreign batsmen have struggled. No-one averages over 50 (for players who have played 4 innings or more). Root is way ahead of the pack. South Africans may consider themselves unlucky having to bat on much tougher conditions. Australia tour next, can Steve Smith and David Warner pass the ultimate test and join the ranks of Root? Is India now the yardstick for best batsmen?, you can score runs everywhere but you need to score runs vs India in India to be consider world class. It used to be West Indies in West Indies, then vs Aus in Aus, briefly vs Eng in Eng, now it is vs India in India. Even in Indian team, only Kohli and Pujara average above 50 in last four years. Yeah. Not only were the wins satisfying, but the manner in which the team had to earn them, will make them better in the longer run, I feel.

Younis Khan too was class apart in India. always saw the connection, tall broad lefthanders up the order dictating terms, but obviously Hayden is a burly Aussie and Cook is a decent Englishman, in that sense Hayden had an aura of dominance about him.

They got flatter tracks and also played a rare 5 test match series here with no rain wash-offs, thus contributing to their aggregate runs.

All true. But Root, Bairstow batted pretty well, and Cook, Ali and Stokes had their moments as well. Makes our dominating series win all the more impressive - that's my point. express bowling 1

I think Warner's strength could decide Australia's fate. If he really uses it to his advantage he can probably force a result in Australia's favor by putting our bowlers on the backfoot. However, one good thing about this team from 2001 series is that we have a Jadeja at his best and even Ashwin. This wasn't the case before the start of the series in 2001 as Harbhajan and Raju weren't considered as good before the series. Hence, it gets harder for Warner and co. If he attacks Ashwin, we got Jadeja also which he has to deal with.

AB played in a series where Ashwin and Jadeja average 10-11 and he was 2nd highest run getter of series. He was 2nd in terms of average too. Root was 2nd highest scorer, but England lost matches by innings preventing 2nd batting opportunity for Indian batsmen and average wise he was 7th best batsman of the series.

More than AB and Root, Amla and Younis are two right handers who have not given or thrown their wickets. Root and Ab were good too, but to narrow down and pick the best I would sah:- Among right handers - Amla and Younis Left handers - Hayden and Cook

chewy Posted February 13, 2017 Author Posted February 13, 2017 There should be an asterisk next to all South African batsmen, they played on incredibly tough pitches. India was good in that series, because there was always one batsman out of Murli, Pujara, Kohli and Rahane who stood out with a 50 or 100 in each innings. Just shows India has some solid batsmen, and if any two of these four click then expect 400 plus score, and if all four click then 600 is guaranteed with likes Saha, Ashwin and Jadeja chippinh in. Hopefully this translates in overseas success in the next few years. If likes of England or Australia had played on same pitches, each game would have been over inside 3 days.
MCcricket Posted February 13, 2017 Posted February 13, 2017 What we are seeing under Kohli is a team performance, pacers, spinners, batters, attacking cricket n not just Dhonis way, of spin track restricting runs but sporting or flat decks, this will hold us in good stead in AUS, Eng as well
