If I may add...... ALL Indian captains have generally played very few medium pacers in the last 18 years ( the period in which we had multiple fast and fast-medium pacers to choose from )  unless they were all-rounders like Irfan Pathan.

 

Everyone knows Kohli's and Ganguly's  love for quick bowlers

 

Even Dhoni generally played either fast or fast-medium bowlers and left out medium pacers

• Praveen Kumar, who averaged 25.8  in test matches, played only 6 tests with Dhoni at the helm.   
• Vinay Kumar and Pankaj Singh....2 domestic lejunds, played 1 and 2  test respectively under Dhoni and Umesh, Ishant and Aaron played much more tests.
• Bhuvneshwar Kumar had to sit out in the Asia Cup and World T20 while the fast and fast medium pacers played
• This is what Dhoni had to say about another top domestic pacer ,  Rishi Dhawan  ( who did not play much for India )

"   it is slightly difficult for somebody like a Rishi to come in. He may bowl well, but I am saying it will be slightly difficult for him to be successful with the fielding restrictions. its not even 4th string team. Its u23, with several U19 players. Afghanistan isn't U23.

 Pak SRL and Bangladesh playing U-23 sides.With four players above the age of 23.

 

Others are playing their first XI.Afgan is playing their A team becoz their first team is currently playing intercontinental cup against Ireland.
