End of an Era - Channel 9 loses TV rights

Recommended Posts

After four decades, its all over.

Man I am going to miss then channel 9 coverage honestly. Its been part of our lives and it will feel weird to see summer of cricket from Australia without the Channel 9 coverage. I think with it also ends Bill Lawry era.

Thank You channel 9 for the great memories over the years

you could see this coming with the way these aussie commentators have started travelling to commentate in the leagues around the world, earlier never saw slater stepping out of aus to commentate

The last time this happened. Kerry Packer and Channel9 had started World Series. Can it happen again?

Quote

In May 1977 the cricketing establishment was shaken to the core with the announcement that Kerry Packer, an Australian media magnate, had signed more than three dozen of the world's leading players for a rival tournament to run head-to-head with the 1977-78 Australian season.

The series originated because Packer's attempts to secure TV rights for his Channel Nine network had been dismissed by the Australian Cricket Board in favour of a long-standing, and some said far too cosy, relationship with state broadcaster the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). Packer set about using his corporate wealth to establish a rival attraction for his network, a job made easier by the poor financial rewards offered to players at the time.

Good they're current coverage is truly awful and their commentary style is embarrassing. We were subjected to it here over the winter for the ODI series when cheapskate BT Sport recalled their team after the tests to cut costs and just piggybacked onto Channel 9 commentary with Swann, Vaughan and the host guy (who usually does football) in a studio in London.
